  1. WI 31-1published at 16 overs

    Brathwaite 25, Bishoo 1

    Broad is not happy.

He's stood halfway down the pitch with both hands on hips as Brathwaite gets another off the outside edge and down to third man for four.

Broad only had himself to blame earlier in the over as he got too leg side and Brathwaite clipped off his hip for four.

Moeen Ali gets down well to save a couple with a dive at mid-wicket to end the over. The crowd give him a warm round of applause.

  2. WI 27-1published at 15 overs

Blue medical tape is once again peaking out below Jimmy Anderson's shirt on his right upper arm.

The England seamer is being shown plenty of his stumps by Bishoo but for now the nightwatchman is surviving.

Anderson is finding plenty of swing but Bishoo is frustrating with a solid-ish forward defensive and the occasional swing and a miss.

  3. WI 23-1published at 14 overs

The Mexicans are already in place in the Western Terrace. The sales of sombreros must increase in the run up to a Test match.

Stuart Broad starts from the Football Stand end and is already looking grumpy.

He finds the edge of Brathwaite's bat but it stays low and skids through Joe Root's legs at second slip and runs away for four.

Stu is not happy with his skipper's efforts. He shakes his head as he marches back to the top of his mark.

I've been in Bishoo's situation before. He'll have dreamed of a hundred and have spent all morning having throwdowns. Nobody would have wanted to bowl to him in the nets but he'd be reminding them he was the man at the crease.

  5. WI 19-1published at 13 overs

    Brathwaite 13 Bishoo 1

Bishoo did do well last night but he is being tested by a fresh Jimmy Anderson right from the off.

One away and one back in from Jimmy and Bishoo plays and misses.

The sun is peaking through some dark clouds at Headingley. It won't be easy out there is morning.

Bishoo did a good job as nightwatchman. He looked quite secure in nasty, gloomy conditions. His reward is the chance to make a score today.

  7. WI 19-1published at 12 overs

What's this!? An early start in Test match cricket? Remarkable scenes.

At 10:59 it is Anderson to Bishoo to start us off.

My 8-year-old daughter (who plays cricket for Aldershot CC) has decided to help Joe Root and the selectors with the Ashes team.

I’ve attached the starting XI that she has chosen. Note the recall for Alex Hales!

England's Chris Woakes speaking to TMS: "We have got to a decent score. We would would like a few more but we have to bowl well today. The pitch has looked good but it has done a bit as well.

"It always nice to be back out there. It has been a long lay off. It has been a frustrating time. Playing for England is never taken for granted and it was a real nice place to be out there."

There's a charity book stall on the concourses, with plenty of YCCC books and it's £13 for Ricky Ponting's autobiography. Any takers?

And I'll just put this out there...

Only two fast bowlers - Glenn McGrath and Courtney Walsh - have taken 500 Test wickets.

    James Anderson is on 493...

So who will West Indies be looking to for runs?

Jermaine Blackwood was the only player in Jason Holder's side to make 50 last week but he is likely to move down to number seven as a result of the nightwatchman.

Kraigg Brathwaite was tidy last night in difficult conditions. Could he go on to make a score?

Roston Chase has the next best average of the top order with 44.23 in his 12-match career.

Our very own Tim Oscroft is watching from the stands at Headingley today and he's spotted Tim Bresnan doing some television work. Big Tim was a good player in his time, wasn't he? In fact, he could do a job in international cricket now. Certainly in the shorter formats...

That meant West Indies had a tricky 12-over session to face the deadly duo Anderson and Broad in the gloom.

Jimmy moved from 492 Test wickets to 493 with the dismissal of Kieran Powell but the tourists fought through to 19-1 at the close.

Opener Kraigg Brathwaite will start this morning alongside nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo as the cloud once again rolls in over Leeds.

The Windies made 305 in two innings last week, can they improve on that over the next few days?

West Indies had a good day yesterday. They dropped England's two best batsmen and still bowled them out for 258.

  18. Day one recappublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 26 August 2017

    Morning all.

If there was a script already written before day one then the outcome definitely did not match.

England's top order frailties resurfaced and Joe Root's side were bowled out for 258 despite a Ben Stokes hundred.

Under cloudy skies at Headingley, West Indies bowlers were far better with red ball than pink last week with the returning Shannon Gabriel particularly impressive.

But it could have been so much better with catches going down off Joe Root and Ben Stokes - England's top scorers in the day.

West Indies' bowlers improved dramatically from the first Test on day one yesterday and now it is the batsmens' turn to impress.

They lost 19 wickets in a day at Edgbaston, surely something similar is out of the equation today?

As for England all eyes are on one man as he closes in on another milestone...
