Woakes is not ready, let him play out the County Championship fixtures. TRJ would have been a far better bet here.

Anderson's ante is already upped but he could do with more support from t'other end.

Another fierce in-swinger thwacks Brathwaite on the thigh pad.

Ah, Anderson rather spoils the over with one that swings too far down leg and glances off the pad for four leg byes.

England know they are in a real contest here. They are trying to up the ante.

  4. WI 147-3published at 48 overs

Woakes, who has been pretty poor since lunch, is yanked - here comes Stokes. Ugh, that's worse - a loosener that is duly called a wide.

Again there's some good carry from this end - but it's far too wide and short.

That's even wider! Stokes has bowled two wides in an over of Test cricket.

Straighter from Stokes but Brathwaite easily defends a couple and leaves the rest. A dross over.

    Brathwaite 74, S Hope 59

Shai Hope punches one off the back foot for a couple. Anderson snarls.

Here's the comeback - a vicious in-swinger that beats Hope's defences and flies off his thigh towards second slip.

But Hope springs eternal and guides another delicate shot away for two before seeing out the over.

Benjamin: Woakes said himself it's a 'pitch it up day'.. yet he's constantly it sticking short of a length and wide? Fair play Windies.

  7. WI 141-3published at 46 overs

    Brathwaite 73, S Hope 55

That can't have been in the plan - an absolute guff ball from Woakes. It's wide and short and Brathwaite cuts it wide of point for four.

Elsewhere, the Warwickshire man is getting some good carry through to Bairstow but it's too wide and too easy for Brathwaite to swerve out of the way.

  8. WI 137-3published at 45 overs

    Brathwaite 69, S Hope 55

Five dots from Anderson in response to that boundary.

Not much menace in England's bowling at the moment as the sun belts down on Headingley.

Woakes chatting to Anderson in the change over - plans afoot? They need something.

Shai Hope looking in fine fettle - Anderson strays full and gets clipped away through midwicket for four.

That's the 100 partnership between Brathwaite and Hope. They've played brilliantly so far.

It is good to see Chris Woakes back in the England side but you can tell he is a bit undercooked.

He has always been a natural swinger of the ball but the better he bowls, the later it swings.

At the moment it is swinging very much from the hand and even though it is extravagant it is easy to play against.

  11. WI 133-3published at 44 overs

    Brathwaite 69, S Hope 51

Woakes continues - looking very much like a man short on cricket.

His third ball is short on length - and not quick or straight enough - as Brathwaite drives it away off the back foot for four.

A better, well-directed bouncer to finish.

With West Indies only 129 behind they are in a very strong position. If they turn this into a 100 or 150 partnership it is when you start to think 'hang on, we're in a bit of bother here'.

  13. WI 129-3published at 43 overs

    Brathwaite 65, S Hope 51

Nothing much doing in this Anderson over until the fifth ball is a bit of a peach - some bounce and pace that gets through Shai Hope and strikes him on the back leg.

More of that needed for England.

  14. WI 128-3published at 42 overs

    Brathwaite 64, S Hope 51

Good response from Woakes to follow up that boundary with four dots.

Can either or both of this pair convert and make a century? Would be wonderful to see.

    WI 128-3

Shot! Lovely drive down the ground from Shai Hope for four to bring up his second half-century in 12 Tests.

Woakes straying far too full and Hope picked it up deliciously.

This is an encouraging start for West Indies after lunch.

Right here comes Anderson - oh. The worst ball he's bowled all day is duly driven away off the back to the fence by Shai Hope. Lovely shot, ropey loosener.

Anderson then finds the edge but it's controlled enough by Hope, who picks up two more.

Better from Anderson but Hope still dabs a single off the last ball. Windies looking very good after lunch.

  18. WI 115-3published at 40 overs

    Brathwaite 64, S Hope 38

Good shape from Woakes but his pace is down in the low 80s straight after lunch.

Shai Hope picks a full ball up well, driving for a couple out to deep over.

A late cut through the gully area then brings three. A dot to finish.

The West Indies pair are walking back out to the middle. England are already out there - it looks like Chris Woakes will bowl the first over after lunch.

Mr Matt Henry has just arrived back - turns out he went for a chocolate cookie from a well-known sandwich shop. Decadent.

Anyway, who's ready for some cricket?

Right you are, Vic. Root must be hoping his premier fast bowler has had a refreshing lunch, perhaps a restorative cup of tea and is ready to go again.

Anderson by far the pick of England's bowlers this morning.
