  1. Eng 6-0published at 3 overs

    Cook 2, Stoneman 3

I saw Stoneman score a brisk 38 from 32 balls on this ground for Durham in the County Championship last season but this situation suggests a more watchful approach.

The 30-year-old always looks pretty solid - unlike some of the other openers England have tried - and he picks up another couple with a nudge behind point.

A leg bye from the final ball means he keeps the strike.

Moeen Ali will be key in the fourth innings - there's already some big areas of rough appearing on the pitch. England need to give him a decent total to bowl at because his confidence will be a little low after dropping a catch and returning 0-84 in the first innings.

  3. Eng 3-0published at 2 overs

    Trail 166

Stoneman was out driving in the first innings so Kemar Roach is pitching the ball well up to the England opener.

Roach has dismissed Stoneman in both of the Surrey batsman's Test innings so far so this should be a good contest.

For now the opener isn't tempted by a drive and gets his first run with a quick single into the leg side.

I think England need to match West Indies' first innings score here. They need 400 as a minimum.

Cook is hit on the pad from the first ball from Shannon Gabriel. The West Indies appeal but you're never going to get that. It pitched way outside leg stump.

It's a decent first over from the West Indian quick with one delivery squaring Cook up a little but the former skipper isn't fazed and gets off the mark with a typical clip off the pads.

Mark Stoneman does a little bit of gardening at the non-striker's end. There are a few footholes. Spin will play a part as well pace.

    Here we go then.

Mark Stoneman and Alastair Cook head out to the middle effectively -169-0.

The pair will be pleased to see that the sun is out as they take the final step from the dressing room.

The cricket in this match has been utterly fascinating. England have got a real test now.

Jacob Newbury: England can ill afford to lose more than 3 wickets by close of play. Seeing off the new ball from Gabriel/Roach is pivotal

Ian Clarke:, external Its now or never for our top order to shine. Some of these new guys need to take this chance under pressure with the ashes soon

Rob Davidson: Surely never a better time for Stoneman, Wesley or Malan to stake a claim

Well said Rakesh. If the match situation didn't add enough pressure, England have three batsman with their Test futures in doubt.

Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley and Dawid Malan are all in need of runs.

But they'll be forgetting about the Ashes for now. England need the trio to get them back in this game - a game no one expected England to lose.

So that means West Indies have a first innings lead of 169.

Let's get one stat out of the way straight away. West Indies have NEVER lost a Test match with a first innings lead of over 150.

    And there's more.

Only 19 times in Test history has a team conceded a first innings lead of 150 or more and gone on to win the Test.

    Crikey...

With a fine half-century in sight, Jermaine Blackwood unwisely took on the arm of Ben Stokes and fell for 49.

That brought number 11 Shannon Gabriel to the crease who looked swing from the hip, sometimes connecting, sometimes not.

When he did find the middle the ball unsurprisingly went far but eventually the big fast bowler's fun was ended by Ben Stokes.

It was the simplest catch that I think all of us watching would back ourselves to catch.

When the ball slipped out of Moeen's grasp and onto the turf the West Indies were on 333-7 with a lead of just 75.

Blackwood was on just 21 at the time but he and his captain Jason Holder thumped their way to a 75-run partnership from just 92 balls.

The partnership was eventually broken by Chris Woakes with Moeen making amends and clinging on to a much tougher chance.

Mark Treagust: Moeen Ali is the most inconsistent player - brilliant 100s and hat-tricks one day, dropped dollies and rank bowling the next!

In the words of Barry Davies - "Just look at his (Root's) face!"

It was the perfect start for England with James Anderson dismissing West Indies' hero from yesterday Shai Hope on the first ball of the day and Shane Dowrich a ball later.

But could the crucial moment of this match be Moeen Ali's drop of Jermaine Blackwood?

    Thanks Jack.

A fine effort. Go and give those fingers a well deserved rest.

I reckon if you told England they'd bowl West Indies out before lunch they'd have taken it but equally if you asked Jason Holder whether he'd be happy with a 98-run session he'd have snapped your hands off.

Let's have a look at the key moments of the morning.

Right - the lunch break is cue for my lunch too.

It's been a pleasure this morning - one of the most frantic starts I've ever live texted, followed by some great late-order hitting by Windies to reassert their dominance.

Matt Henry will take you through the interval and the first part of a vital afternoon session for England's top order.

    Catch you later.

It's ask the umpire time with John Holder over on TMS during the lunch interval.

Stumps in Dhaka but who is the happier after the first day of Australia's two-match Test series against Bangladesh?

The Aussies bowled their hosts out for 260 with Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins taking three wickets each.

But, in their reply, the tourists lost David Warner, Usman Khwaja and Lyon within 10 balls of each other before reaching 18-3 at the close.

Matt Renshaw (6) and Steve Smith (3) will resume tomorrow.

Not just England with top order troubles then, ey?

    Full scorecard here.

That was a tremendous effort from West Indies, a really good batting display. When you think about their batting at Edgbaston, it is chalk and cheese.

They have played with so much skill and discipline.

England bowled a yard-and-a-half too short.

I will be very interested to see what it is like when West Indies bowl. If they bowl like the first innings it will be very tricky.
