England have to bowl collectively miles better. It was poor apart Jimmy Anderson, who was brilliant.

I'd like England to have a lead of at least 180-200.

    Malan 33, Stokes 9

Better from Bishoo. He finds Stokes' outside edge but the ball goes down giving the slip fielder no chance.

A punch of the gloves between Stokes and Malan. So far they both seem to be picking the West Indian leggie despite that stroke.

    Shot!

The crowd have been kept in a tense silence but they burst into life to appreciate this four from Stokes.

It is short but not that short from Holder if you know what I mean but the Cumbrian whips the ball to the rope.

Bishoo continues to bowl a mixed bag as full toss is mixed in with five good deliveries.

Malan misses out and a single to Stokes is all England manage.

Ian Bell has just been dismissed for 14 for Warwickshire before anyone suggests he should replace Root.

Foot Geek: One of the top five needed a century.. probably wouldn't have picked Malan, but prove me wrong Dawid.

CHarvey: Bloomin' Root, always guarantees runs but only the occasional hundred. Drop him for someone untested and inferior.

Dane le Page: Cook is more valuable to this team than Root. Root contributes every game, but Cook makes huge match-winning knocks more often.

It's a great time for Malan to make 70 or 80 for his country and his Test career.

  7. Eng 217-4published at 72 overs

To add to the drama, the new ball is available in just nine overs.

Malan is finding it hard to score again. Holder bowls one that jags a long way off the seam and it comfortably misses the bat.

England's number five is doing a good job of surviving and needs to punish West Indies for this drop...

Flemming Jensen: And now comes the discussion about Root's conversion "problems". Stop it, just stop it.

Matt Jarocki: Don't really understand why so much criticism of Root. More flak for not converting 50 to 100 than many get for not reaching 50.

Nick Garbutt: How can you complain about a player that's the closest thing you can get to a guaranteed 50+ runs in every innings? Perspective.

Ben Stokes has got to be careful not to think he can just knock it into next week. He doesn't want to get it wrong and get out.

  10. Eng 217-4published at 71 overs

    Malan 32, Stokes 4

Leg spinner Bishoo into the attack as he aims for the footholes outside the left-hander's off stump.

There is plenty of turn as one rips into the all-rounder's pads leading to helps behind the stumps.

The problem West Indies have with Bishoo is shown on the final ball as he bowls a half-tracker that Stokes clubs over to midwicket for four to get off the mark.

It will be a day of ups and downs - you can easily get a couple of quick wickets but then batsmen can get set. It's a really good cricket pitch.

    Andrew Samson

A lot is made of Joe Root getting out between 50 and 100 but he's even more vulnerable between 70 and 90.

He's been out in that range 17 times - 17.3% of all his dismissals.

So that brings an end to the first hour.

England have added 42 runs but they've lost their skipper.

Here is the crucial wicket as Root was out once again between 50 and 99.

  14. drinks break

    Eng 213-4published at 70 overs

    Lead by 44

Malan survives Holder's terrific over to get through to drinks. He has been given two lives in this innings now after feathering one behind last night only for the umpire not to give it.

Holder may not be quick but he causes left-handers in particular all kinds of problems.

It was tough on Powell - most of the way Dowrich was diving across him but pulled out last minute.

  16. dropped catch

Malan dropped on 32published at 69.3 overs

It's all going on. Another sitter goes down.

Jason Holder is back into the attack and he finds Malan's edge as the England man looks to drive.

It was straight at Kieran Powell at first slip but in the slipper's defence Shane Dowrich moves right across in front of him with the gloves before pulling away.

Suddenly it looks like a wicket could fall at any moment.

Olly: Standard performance from Root - does the hard work gets himself in and then gives it away needs not good enough.

Mike: Oh that helps his average/stats. That's all that matters to the Root club. Never mind the team.

Dave Wood: Another failed conversion from Root.

Before that wicket England were pressing on well.

The closest we had come to a wicket was this skewed shot by Malan...

  19. Eng 213-4published at 69 overs

    Lead by 44

Root looked to the skies after that wicket. He knew it was a huge moment. You could see it in his face.

It took an age for him to trudge off. He could not believe what he had done.

Ben Stokes is now at the crease and England need an innings of note from their first innings centurion.

It almost came back into Root after being banged in so it was too close and didn't come off the middle of the bat.

For a millisecond, Root might've thought he had got away with it. But no. Just as West Indies' strike bowlers were running out of steam, Gabriel gets a deserved wicket.
