That boundary hasn't settled Root down. Gabriel beats him twice in a row.

The first time Root is looking to come forward, trying to push the ball to mid off, and the second he lingers back and the ball passes the outside edge again.

The crowd applaud at the end of the over. That's in appreciation of Gabriel rather than Yorkshire's favourite son.

  2. Eng 189-3published at 62.1 overs

That's better form Root. Leg side from Gabriel and the skipper swivels and rolls his wrists for a four behind square on the leg side.

A couple of you are asking if Root has now broken the record for consecutive fifties. No he has not.

The record Root is chasing is half-centuries in consecutive matches so he has already ticked that box with his 50 in the first innings.

  3. Eng 185-3published at 62 overs

    Lead by 16

Roach bowls a couple of deliveries down the leg side to leftie Malan. Perhaps that was due to him struggling to control the swing rather than pitching the ball in the wrong areas.

Malan waves his hand in front of him, suggesting the ball swung in.

Roach over corrects and the rest of the over is outside off stump and a maiden.

Dickie Bird is up in the stands and he's got a formidable suntan. I asked him where he'd been - Scarborough!

Shannon Gabriel looks stiff. Did he do a shift on the doors last night? He'd be a good nightclub bouncer.

  6. Eng 185-3published at 61 overs

    Root 53, Malan 26

Malan has looked more solid than Root so far as the England skipper flirts with a ball of good length outside of off stump.

Luckily Root missed it but he has looked a little edgy.

News from the County Championship. Things haven't got any better for poor Keaton Jennings. He's out first ball for Durham.

This is Dawid Malan's chance to go and get a score. Don't play big shots, just find the gaps for singles.

The sun dips behind the clouds again as Shannon Gabriel charges in to Malan.

The big-shouldered West Indian quick has been the best bowler in this match in my opinion. Quick, accurate and threatening.

Excellent from Malan. He lets the first three balls go by and then Gabriel searches for a magic delivery and it's too full. A punch down the ground for four. It's a no ball as well.

    Malan is really impressing me.

For the first time in a long time, teams have found a potential weakness in Joe Root's game. If you bowl hip high wide of off stump, it brings the slip cordon into play. Australia will be noting this, especially with the extra bounce over there.

Root's got his 50 but he won't be pleased with how he's played this over. He's edged twice through the slips and hasn't got going yet.

50 for Rootpublished at 60 overs

    Root 53, Malan 21

Streaky again from Root. On the back foot, this is definitely an edge that goes in the same gap as the shot earlier in the over.

That was at a catchable height but it brings up Root's half century.

He sheepishly raises his bat. A good first over from Roach. The bowler is unfortunate to concede eight runs off it.

  12. Eng 175-3published at 59.2 overs

    Root 49, Malan 21

Roach finds the outside part of Root's bat on the second ball of the day but the ball goes between the two slips and two gullies and runs away for four.

I'm sure young Joe will say he played that but I'm not so sure.

Everything depends on Joe Root for me. If he scores a hundred, England win. I'd prefer to be in West Indies shoes at the minute though.

The cloud is breaking a little as the players reach the middle but it still looks bowler friendly.

Kemar Roach to Joe Root to start.

    Away we go...

I said yesterday's afternoon and evening sessions were crucial and now I'm going to say it again.

Whoever wins this first hour could well win the match. West Indies will be looking for something similar to Jimmy Anderson's exploits yesterday and England the opposite.

Jerusalem is being sung. Joe Root and Dawid Malan are on their way out, as are the West Indian players and umpires.

    It's almost time.

It's been a memorable day for Bangladesh's Shakib al Hasan, in his 50th Test, after he took a five-wicket haul against Australia.

That means he becomes only the fourth man in Test history to take a five-for against all Test opposition, following in the footsteps of Sri Lanka spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath and South Africa paceman Dale Steyn.

His 5-68 earned Bangladesh a first-innings lead of 43 runs in Mirpur - Ashton Agar's 41 not out at number nine rescuing the tourists from 144-8 to 217 all out.

The scorecard for that match is here.

Not the words of Headingley's chief ticket seller but those of England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow.

He's right though and England may well need the support of the Yorkshire crowd today.

Tickets are only £15 today. Get yourselves there, send us a picture and we'll post the best on this page.

    Weather

First things first - the weather. So often crucial as Headingley.

It is cloudy at the moment which will encourage Jason Holder as he completes his warm up but the sun is predicted to come out for the start of play.

That should help the batting side but West Indies' bowlers still made it look difficult under blue skies yesterday.
