That is a massive moment in this match. Root has gone, cutting a ball that was too close to him.

It was a good catch by Shai Hope, it rose on him, he juggled it but grabbed it at the second attempt.

I am so, so sorry. The commentators' curse strikes again.

Just as England were starting to push their lead, the West Indies claim the massive wicket of Joe Root.

It is a good short ball from Gabriel that hurries Root on the cut and he guides it straight to gully who fumbles but clings on.

I'm watching Root and trying to contextualise him and I come to the conclusion that I'm watching one of England's best post-war batsmen.

    Brilliant from the England skipper.

He plays shots all around the wicket with such ease. I have banged on about his conversion rate in the past but he just makes batting look so easy.

Another chase for Holder into the leg side but once again the ball wins the race to the boundary.

    He's bowled him! Sort of...

It was very last minute that Root pulled away.

    Joe Root is good.

It's not a great delivery from Roach, a full toss, just the Yorkshireman doesn't miss out.

    Bowled him!

Don't panic, people. Roach sneaks up on Root and castles the stumps but the batsman had pulled away as he was not ready. Roach chuckles and holds up a hand in apology.

Will: What do you think of Daryl Mitchell to open up with Cook, and Joe Clarke to bat at three rather than Westley?

Mitch is a top man and has hit four centuries this season but I don't think a 33-year-old playing in Division Two is on England's radar, whether you think he should be or not.

Joe Clarke is class. It would be mightily tough to throw a 21-year-old in at three for the Ashes but he'll play Test cricket for England. Maybe sooner rather than later if the top five issues continue.

    Root 63, Malan 32

Now big Shannon Gabriel is on his knees.

He bowls a good ball to Malan and the batsman mistimes his shot and it only just clears Roston Chase at square leg.

The ball reaches the square leg boundary in front of a not yet full Western Terrace. The lead is building.

  9. Eng 199-3published at 66.5 overs

    Root 63, Malan 28

Oooo that was risky. Malan pushes into the off side and sets off for a single. It's Jason Holder with the throw but it is well wide of the stumps. Malan got out the big dive to make his ground and I think he might have just made it but I'm not certain.

That's much better. Not put off Root dabs the ball into the ground and the batsmen set off for a well-run single.

Gabriel isn't impressed at the fielder's efforts. He stands in the middle of the pitch waving his arms in frustration.

Philip G Henley: 30 for 3 is quite normal for England these days.

Root and Malan have now seen through the first half hour. Excellent from this pair.

It is another maiden from Roach to Malan but it was a good over. There is plenty of time left in this match. The batsman doesn't need to rush things.

When Root tried to hit a ball that wasn't there to hit, he nearly edged behind - even if it did bring up his 50...

  12. Malan hits a boundary off Gabrielpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 28 August 2017

I'm sorry Jack but I'm not having that. West Indies have bowled very well to him, yesterday in particular.

Malan has been rightfully watchful and put away the ball when he's had the chance, as this clip shows.

The polite applause for every single collected really is a classic sound of the England summer as Root and Malan both knock ones to start Gabriel's latest over.

Is Root now into his rhythm?

One of his textbook clips through mid-wicket runs away to the rope. Jason Holder tried to stick his big size 14s (I'm guessing there) in the way but the ball trickled over the rope. It also brings up a crucial 100 partnership between these two.

There's a greater sense of anxiety in the West Indies camp than the England camp because of the potency of the England lower order and the fact West Indies have not been in this type of situation for such a long time.

  19. Eng 189-3published at 64 overs

Gabriel was once again over 90mph as he finished that last over. It was a really impressive one.

Roach has not got the same pace but he's keeping things tight.

A good stop in the gully prevents Malan from scoring in his latest over. Back-to-back maidens for Roach. He's bowled seven now in this innings.
