I can already hear the complaints about Alastair Cook's catching, but that really was a tough one. England drag themselves off for the break. The have taken three wickets in this session, but have dropped three catches of varying difficulty. You'd rather be in the England dressing room, but one Windian partnership could make the chase tricky.

It was a thick edge and it ricocheted straight into Alastair Cook's knee. I daresay the only player in the England team I'd have backed to catch this is off the field, Ben Stokes.

Dropped! Chance put down from the final ball of the session. It's Alastair Cook at gully, Jason Holder's flashing drive going in and out of the hands. It would have been a very sharp snaffle - the ball came quickly - but it's a chance all the same. Joe Root has his head in his hands.

Martin: Both teams have seemingly talented players but with a tendency for suicidally rash shots - influenced by the game's short forms?

Anthony Kane: Watching England reminding me of my own cricket season. Took 17 wickets, had 20 catches go down off my bowling.

Moeen Ali whips through his set, making sure England get another one in before the break. In the nets, Mason Crane works with Saqlain Mushtaq. At lunchtime, TMS will announce the winner of the MCC/BBC Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket Award. Stay tuned. Joe Root will bowl the last over before the break.

They have to go for their shots - the wicket is good at the moment. They have to get as many as they can before the inevitable swing from Anderson or Stokes.

Chris Woakes is on the field, possibly one of the most experienced 12th men that England will ever employ. Toby Roland-Jones stalks up the hill, time and again meeting the big stride of Jason Holder. There's not much happening, so I'll set you some more questions.

Only two other players have made more than 200 runs and taken 30 wickets in a summer for England, Ian Botham in 1981 and Andrew Flintoff in 2005.

Spin. The lesser-spotted Moeen Ali gets his first roll of the innings, using the slope to challenge both edges of the right-handed Holder. Holder responds by driving square for four. It almost feels like we're drifting towards the interval. On the boundary-edge, England spin-bowling coach Saqlain Mushtaq spits something out of his mouth. Come on, Saqqy, this is the home of cricket.

What a shot that was from Hope to bring up his fifty, whipping it off the back foot through mid-on.

A top shot takes a top player to a top half-century. Shai Hope whips Roland-Jones through mid-wicket off the back foot with a straight bat. That is so difficult to play. Twin centuries at Headingley, now a fifty at Lord's. Hope should ask Shivnarine Chanderpaul for advice on carrying the West Indies batting.

Reg Regler: Shai Hope looks a player, with Brathwaite & Chase, one wonders what difference Shiv Chanderpaul would make to WI?

    S Hope 48, Holder 1

Hope nears a well-deserved half-century with a handsome drive for four off Stokes. I reckon he'd improve the England team, you know. Maybe batting at number three. He's in his 13th Test. I wonder if he would have got that many chances for England. Stokes doesn't look in the best of health. He's heading off the field.

Holder has a lot of time when he bats - he's a very casual, elegant batsman. He certainly looks like a batsman who has a few tons in him. He has one against England.

There are empty bottles perched on the fences that separate the stands from the field of play. It's not the warmest, so maybe a brew would be a better idea than something fizzy. The tall Jason Holder is on the front foot to Roland-Jones, elegantly playing the ball into the off side. Time for more of the exam...

Once again England try to get the ball changed and again the umpires give it back to them. Shai Hope, aware that he's running out of partners, looks like he wants to get on with it. When one off the hip goes fine to the boundary, keeper Jonny Bairstow gives another chase. The man has more energy than a power station.

Harry McCrea: Let's be honest about the West Indies batting. Other than two innings each from Shai Hope and Brathwaite, it's still been underwhelming.
