I don't think we have learnt a great deal from this summer's Test matches. We know England are a competitive Test match team but the problem areas in the batting are still there.

I like the way Malan played and I like Stoneman, even though we haven't seen him at his best. Out of all the opening batsmen we have tried, he looks like he has got the most natural game. I think it is just about finding the number three.

It has started to rain even harder and there are puddles appearing on the ground. Not looking good, eh?

Rory Stoves: Andrew Flintoff consoling Brett Lee should be a statue outside Edgbaston.

Ollie Shaw-Mellors: Anderson shushing Johnson after bowling Harris would look nice outside the WACA.

It's starting to rain harder and harder at Trent Bridge. We have a cut-off time of 17:56 BST to get a 20-over game in.

England fast bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Looking back to 2015, we weren't convinced we could get 300 and the teams we played knew they could do it comfortably. Now, England have the ability to get 400 and think they can do it every time they take the field. They can adapt to conditions, read pitches and have the intelligence to assess the situation.

VB: If we're making statues, can we have Athers staring down Donald after defending against 'that spell' of bowling? Beautiful.

Chris Painter: Can we have a statue of Broad asking for a DRS review? If we could put it somewhere pointless and unnecessary, that'd be ideal.

  11. Hameed fractures fingerpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 21 September 2017

Some news coming in from the County Championship ...

Lancashire and England batsman Haseeb Hameed has fractured a finger after being struck by a delivery in Lancashire's 36-run loss to Middlesex earlier.

He retired hurt before coming back out at number 11 to try and salvage a win.

The one thing I took from Pakistan winning the Champions Trophy was that they got the ball moving, they took wickets and got the ball shaping.

For England, the batting is as good as ever. The bowling is decent but they can learn new skills to learn how to bowl different balls at key moments.

There's been a lot of positives for England in white-ball cricket since the 2015 World Cup. They are making strides, getting better and better. I thought they might get to the final of the Champions Trophy, but the conditions weren't particularly English - they suited India and Pakistan. They will keep getting better between now and 2019 and will mount a serious challenge to winning the World Cup.
