Matt Hewlett: Eoin Morgan is the Jermaine Defoe of cricket.

Jon Dunn: It's embarrassing how out of form Morgan is. So many players who should be picked ahead of him.

Jonathan France: You’d have to think that with the riches England have batting wise Morgan wouldn’t get in the side if he wasn’t captain?

  2. Eng 85-3published at 13 overs

England have played the straight drive well today as Stoke drills it past mid-on for four. Fuller from Cummins and Stokes drives, finding the gap on the off for three more. Joe Root, who took a few overs to adapt to this wicket, happy to work it off the pads for an easy single. England need these two to form a partnership now. Although, with rain predicted later, the run-rate needs to not suffer too much.

I've said all along that Morgan doesn't play enough. There are too many good players around, when you think the likes of Malan or Billings can't get in. He has to not make himself vulnerable. It's conceivable that he could be dropped before the World Cup - that's still two years away.

Since the 2015 World Cup, Morgan is averaging 46 with a strike-rate just under 100.

    Root 22, Stokes 3

Ben Stokes is in a lot earlier than he and England probably expected. The England all-rounder squeezes one off the hips towards square leg to get off the mark with a two.

You see this a lot from Morgan. I don't know what's he trying to do with that, maybe trying to drop it on the leg side. Fourth-stump line is his vulnerable area. He's on a pretty poor run of form.

    Morgan c Hope b Holder 0 (Eng 74-3)

Eoin Morgan's poor run with the bat continues, it's a golden duck for the captain. It was a fairly decent delivery from Holder, angling across the offside, but Morgan did not need to play at it. He just had a little nibble, trying to almost play it with a dead bat and, in doing so, edging it into the gloves of Hope.

Full credit to the wicketkeeper because he went straight away to Holder to say they should review. Even after the first replay I thought it was going over the top, so you can understand why the umpire gave it not out.

A great review. At first glance, it didn't look out but replays show the full ball was hitting the leg-stump and there was no inside edge.

Cummins finds the gap between Hales' bat and pad, although it may have flicked the pad before it went through to the keeper? Given not out. West Indies review. LBW?

  11. Eng 71-1published at 10.3 overs

We see the first change in the bowling as Miguel Cummins comes on for Taylor. Shot! Full and Hales with a bottom-handed punch to the left of mid-on, the ball racing down towards and over the boundary foam.

Hales hasn't been as explosive as you may expect but he has played some lovely shots.

Holder gets one to bounce up sharply off the turf and it carries over the top of Hales' bat and through to Hope behind the stumps.

Root is squared up by a fuller delivery, the ball falling short of backward point. I said England look comfortable, but this ball is certainly doing a bit. Bowling first on this deck was probably a no-brainer.

The pitch looks pretty ugly, so we hope it plays better than it looks. Batsmen will see the short straight boundary and think that they fancy a bit of that.

  15. Eng 61-1published at 9 overs

    Root 18, Hales 27

Jerome Taylor continues for his fifth over and it's a beautiful shot from Joe Root. Leaning forward and flicking it past mid-wicket for four, bringing up England's fifty. Shot of the day for me.

Scrap that, THIS was the shot of the day - a sweet straight drive from Alex Hales, timed to perfection, back past the bowler.

Another four! This isn't a contender for shot of the day, it was just a poor, poor ball. Short, wide, on the up and Hales cuts it. A few big overs and England look a lot more comfortable now.

The boundaries are quite small and West Indies have two spinners - this ground is not renowned for spin. England might fancy hitting a few into the crowd.

  17. Eng 48-1published at 8 overs

Alex Hales looks to play a lofted drive but can't quite get the elevation, the ball just over the head of Bishoo at mid-off. If that was Holder, or any other of the big West Indies lads, it would have been taken.

Short of a length from Holder and Hales whips it past square leg for four. Eight from the over.

A beauty from Jerome Taylor. Shaping away and Joe Root plays inside the line and is lucky not to edge it.

Full and angling down the leg side and Root clips it through the gap in the mid-wicket region for four. Not the most convincing looking shot, but the next one certainly is. Short and picked up early by the England Test captain who pulls it past backward square leg for four more.

Make that three boundaries in a row, a gift from Taylor which is flicked through square-leg. England's best over the match.
