  1. Eng 28-1published at 6 overs

West Indies deserve that wicket for their efforts this morning, and they nearly get a second as Joe Root has a flirt with one outside off. A good delivery, rising from back of a length.

A single down to third man gets Root off the mark.

That's an unusual dismissal. It was short and straight. It seemed to hurry Bairstow as he looked to turn into into the leg side. It's pretty ugly for a player of Bairstow's quality. Batsmen like speed on a pitch. When the ball is holding up they get into a pickle.

    Bairstow c & b Holder 13 (Eng 27-1)

It was six and out! Short of a length and Bairstow, looking to clip it over to the leg side, sends a leading edge looping into the air for an easy grab for the captain. No repeat of Old Trafford for Bairstow.

  4. Eng 27-0published at 5.2 overs

Bairstow and Hales exchange singles from the first two deliveries, Holder bowling a front-foot no-ball on the second. Another free-hit for England, sloppy from West Indies.

Short and straight and clubbed for six.

I am listening to your commentary from Bristol and I am fearful we will get one full innings from England followed by insufficient overs in the West Indies innings to make a game. In games where there is the threat of rain later in the day why not split each innings into two periods of 25 overs each. If it proves not possible to get the full 50 overs in from each side then the result would be based on the scores after 25 overs.

  6. Eng 19-0published at 5 overs

West Indies are getting a fair amount of movement today as Taylor squares up Bairstow, a leading edge with the ball trickling over to the off side.

Bairstow then steers one back past the bowler but only gets a single for his efforts, Taylor doing well to get a hand to it.

The swing nearly outfoxes Hales, who plays it late and nearly sends the ball looping back towards the bowler.

There's a definite plan to Hales, which is to bowl back of a length, not letting him to stick the front foot down the track and slap it through the off side.

  8. Eng 17-0published at 4 overs

    Bairstow 5, Hales 10

England haven't quite got their timing right this morning, as Alex Hales drags a pull shot over mid-on for two. Miguel Cummins slips as he tries to field.

Hales is huffing and puffing, shaking his head and looking frustrated. Calm down, lad. There you go, too much width form Holder and Hales with a textbook square cut for four.

The free-hit was about 15mph quicker than anything else Taylor has bowled. The yorker is always a good one to bowl to a tall player - it's a long way down.

  10. Eng 11-0published at 3 overs

    Bairstow 5, Hales 4

He's bowled him!! Fear not England fans, it was a free-hit.

Short and wide from Taylor and Hales cuts it past backward point and they run three. But Taylor had overstepped the mark. On the free-hit, it was a nice recovery from the West Indies seamer who bowled a full delivery which clattered into the stumps.

Extraordinary shot from Bairstow to the end the over, back of a length and the Yorkshireman slices it over point, not where he intended it to go, for the first boundary of the match.

The straight boundaries here are frightening for a spin bowler. You turn round to talk to your long-off and don't even have to raise your voice.

  12. Eng 3-0published at 2 overs

    Bairstow 1, Hales 1

Captain Jason Holder orchestrates his field as he steams in and bowls a decent tight line to Bairstow, angling into the body.

Holder strays down leg and the England opener works it down to fine leg for the first runs off the bat. Then Hales gets off the mark with a clip to mid-wicket.

This is a decent start by the Windies. England being watchful, biding their time.

DrDublin: Given the weather reports, would it not be sensible to simply agree a 20 over match? Radical thinking I know.

  14. Eng 1-0published at 1 over

Jerome Taylor has the new ball and finds some late movement swinging away from the Bairstow. Short and wide from Taylor as Bairstow plays two cut nice-looking cut shots straight to the man at point.

It takes England five balls to get off the mark, courtesy of a leg-bye. A quiet start.

OK, it seems weatherman Stav is less optimistic than I am.

Meanwhile, the stats don't bode well for the tourists ... England have won 13 of their last 14 completed ODIs against West Indies, including each of their last six.

  20. 'Looks like rain will be the winner'published at 10:55 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

BBC weatherman Stav Danaos on TMS: "After Trent Bridge, once again rain will threaten play. It's a dry start but rain is in the vicinity. There will be short spells from late in the first innings.

"I expect several interruptions to the second innings. By about 17:00 BST, the rain looks like it will be the winner, we will see an early finish."
