There'd be no cricket in Chelmsford for sure - coming in horizontal all morning. Maybe windsurfing on the outfield.

Stokes 45, Buttler 2
You can feel something building. New Zealand have bowled well, chipping away, England have two men capable of going large at the crease. But another wicket or two here and the Black Caps will be bang on top. Clutch moment in the game. Poor delivery from Milne, driven for four by Stokes. He has 45 from 46 without really trying.

Dismay in the Cardiff stands at Root's dismissal. That was a partnership warming up the corners a treat - 54 off 56, with the promise of greater acceleration to come. But as long as Stokes is in situ, no-one is leaving their seat.
Anderson 7-0-39-2
Root had only faced 22 deliveries in the previous 12 overs. Was there a need to get on with it? Looking again, it was an awful shot. An attempted swipe through the off side. Jos Buttler is the new man, only saved from being leg before first up by a tiny inside edge.

Not much of a ball really, he may have held it back a little bit. Root through the shot early.

Joe Root is not happy at all. It was a short, wide, nondescript ball that he went to give the kitchen sink and got a horrible bottom edge. He's hanging his head in disgust with himself.
Root b Anderson 64 (Eng 188-4)
You could feel it coming. Joe Root hadn't seen much action of late and this is a dismissal of frustration. A nothing ball, no feet, a nothing shot and a chop on to the stumps. That's a big wicket for New Zealand, who are keeping England in check. Root stomps off with whacks of the air and howls of anger.

Tim Butcher: It's midwinter in Cape Town, South Africa, where the only thing that would stop cricket today would be the risk of sunstroke.
Matt Andrews: Edgbaston would be useless for cricket today. Raining on and off and a near hurricane with the winds 30 minutes away!
Fetch! Poor delivery from Corey Anderson. Half-volley into the Ben Stokes wheelhouse, lofted straight back to the short boundary for six.

The rain has suddenly arrived from nowhere. The sky looks as it has done all morning.
Root 64, Stokes 33
You've been diddled, Darren. It's raining as Southee begins a new over, noticeably big drops. Wind howling. Maybe you weren't unlucky after all, Daz. Excellent fielding by Neil Broom at backward point almost runs out Joe Root, but the throw is wide. Stokes is only dealing in dots or boundaries. When the boundaries don't come, the board stops ticking.

Darren Purnell: I was unsuccessful in the ticket ballot for today's match yet the Swalec is half empty. How does that work?!
England had actually only added 18 in the previous four overs. New Zealand bowling well to Stokes, starving Root of the strike. Neesham, nothing more than military medium, serves up a floaty half-volley that Stokes drives wide of mid-off for four.
Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
This pitch is very sluggish. You would expect England have the makings of a very competitive total here. Then it's over to the big lads to mix it up with some cross-seam deliveries.

Loving this chat. Places where you couldn't play cricket today. Pictures welcome. Can confirm that Salford would be awful. Noah currently parking his ark. New Zealand ring the changes, Tim Southee, handsome quiff, hangs the ball outside the off stump of a swiping Stokes. It feels like the calm before the storm.

Thomas Stacey: Headingley may have been a sell-out but there wouldn't of been any cricket played. The rain hasn't stopped since 8am(ish).
Joe Root is fiddling with his bat handle during the interval. It gives us chance to show you the three wickets that have fallen so far today...

These days, players have their own cups, drinks etc. I used to run out for 12th man duties with a job-lot of plastic cups and orange squash.
Eng 166-3
If you're not in danger of being run out, you're just in danger. Root has to take action to avoid being sconned by a Stokes belt back down the ground. The new England skip and vice-skip are enjoying each other's company out there. Drinks.
Eng 162-3
Stokes and Root exchanged nervous grins. It was a Stokes drive that was touched on to the stumps by Jimmy Neesham. Cheers in Cardiff when the replay showed that Root got back in time.
