Milne held that back a little, it was 73mph, almost like a leg-spinner out of the back of the hand.
Hales b Milne 56 (Eng 118-2)
Reach your half-century, thrash a six, then get bowled! Hales flat-batted Milne into the stands for six then had his feet glued to the crease for the next delivery. He went to shovel from the hip, expecting a short ball, and the ball has stayed straight and knocked the bails off.
Eng 110-1
Width from Milne, and Root slams it to the ropes. A quick single brings Hales on strike - something he's been starved off recently - and the crowd breaks into polite applause as he jogs through for his half-century. 60 balls, with three boundaries and one six. It's his tenth in ODI cricket, too.

Hales seems to have stalled a little. He's scored just three runs in 11 balls and has gone 10 overs without a boundary.
Root 40, Hales 49
Kane Williamson turns to his sixth bowler of the innings - enter Jimmy Neesham. He finds the edge of Root's bat straight away, but there's no-one at slip and the ball trickles away for four runs. That's triple figures up for England. Andrew Strauss is watching on from the stands, in sunglasses. Sunglasses. It's grey and blowing a gale, yet he's still got the sunnies on. Bold. Hales rounds the over with a big ol' yahoo that misses everything, including the ball.

The score predictor is saying England will score 303. Let's take that now and let New Zealand have a bat.
Short from Milne, and Hales pulls it leisurely for a single. A good over from Milne, mixing up his lengths, and rounding off the over with a sharp bouncer that Hales ducks. There's not much doing out there.
Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on Test Match Special
That's a nonchalant stroke from Joe Root. There's no spin for Mitchell Santner and he's not got much to play with considering the short boundaries.
Root 34, Hales 48
What do you do about Roy? Drop him? Chuck Bairstow up top? Or stick with him and hope he comes good? Ooft, Root has no time at all for Mitchell Santner. A step down the pitch and he lofts him over the ropes yet again. That's a bit of rubbish from Santner I'm afraid, short, going down leg, and Root sweeps to help the ball on its merry journey to the boundary.

Northern Horners: Really questionable captaincy decision by Morgan to announce Roy will keep his place through tourney regardless. Hands now tied
Milne 3-0-18-1
Adam Milne is back, cheered on by Luke Ronchi behind the stumps. He goes straight, searching for the lbw, before Hales ducks under a short ball that's called wide. The clouds continue to gather overhead. That's the 50 partnership too, from 56 deliveries.
Time for drinks in Cardiff, with Alex Hales on 46 and Joe Root on 24. It's been a decent morning's work for England, Jason Roy's dismissal aside. Steady accumulation.

A tour of the concourses reveals that the temporary coffee stalls are doing a brisker business than the bars on this overly fresh June morning. The bloke at the cocktail concession needs a hug.
Santner continues and he gets away with a full toss as Root mistimes his shovel through mid-wicket. That's a better ball though, full, into the toes, and Root's chip only just avoids Trent Boult, pedalling forwards. Root's looking to score against the spinner, as seen below...

Anderson 3-0-15-0
Come on now, Kane Williamson. Practice your long barrier. The Blackcaps captain goes down on one knee, misses the ball, which clatters into his knee, and England take a sneaky single. Anderson keeps going wide, trying to tempt Hales, who puffs out his cheeks and rehearses a pull shot. Meanwhile Trent Boult, down at third man, huddles into his jumper as the wind picks up across the ground.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
New Zealand have played plenty of cricket in Wellington. They'll be used to a breeze.
Root 18, Hales 42
Ooft, that's a bit uncomfortable from Hales, pushing forwards at Santner and the ball flies just beyond the grasp of the diving bowler. That's imperious from Root, dancing down the track and hoicking the ball long into the stands for six. Santner just doesn't look that threatening.

I'm sick of this, you have a guy sitting in the shed in the form of his life and they stick with A player who needs to go away and get back into form. This tournament is too short to hope that a player comes good....
