  1. Eng 64-1published at 13 overs

Corey Anderson continues, wide of the crease, and banging the ball in to the batsmen. Root is surprised a touch by a delivery that climbs on him, but he drops his hands and pokes the ball away for a single. Up on the balcony, Jason Roy has a cuppa and a chat with Graham Thorpe.

  2. Roy missing a leg stumppublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

Jason Roy has scored 47 in his last seven innings - here's his dismissal from today, a horrible early judgement to go across his stumps, and Milne doesn't miss.

  3. Eng 60-1published at 12 overs

    Root 9, Hales 38

Kane Williamson is shuffling his pack, with spinner Mitchell Santner on for a twirl. It's a decent over, sticking to a full line, and England push and drive to keep the scoreboard ticking along. Four from the over.

  5. Eng 56-1published at 11 overs

Here's Corey Anderson, and Hales falls over himself as he pushes forward. The ball takes a thick outside edge and flies towards the cover, but it takes a bounce and England nab a single. A good bit of calling from Hales, pushing Root hard, means England can turn a one into a two.

    Jason Roy's scores this summer: 0, 20, 1, 8, 4, 1, 13.

  7. Eng 50-1published at 10 overs

    Root 5, Hales 32

Oh, that's good from Milne, plenty of pace, and Hales can't resist a little fiddle at that. That, however, is imperious from Hales. Onto the pads and Hales flicks it up and over the infield, above a leaping fielder's hand and away to the boundary. Excellent stuff.

Alex Hales is looking in good touch this morning, in a contrast to his opening partner. He's going along at just over a run a ball - two boundaries and one six in his unbeaten 25.

  9. Eng 41-1published at 9 overs

Joe Root, century maker against Bangladesh, is the next man in. Southee has a brief conflab with captain Kane Williamson about how to bowl to Root, before serving up a short ball that Root cracks away to get off the mark. Meanwhile, the telly re-plays Roy's dismissal. It doesn't get any better.

Another pre-meditated shot. He walked right across, exposing his stumps and the ball possibly hit his pad before hitting leg stump.

    Roy b Milne 13 (Eng 37-1)

Oh, Jason. Roy had just hit new bowler Adam Milne for a boundary, the bowler wasn't finding any pace, and Roy's the architect of his own downfall. A step across his stumps and all Milne has to do is bowl a straight ball and it clatters into the sticks. Roy thumps his pad, annoyed with himself, and rightly so.

It was sheeting down on the M4 this morning. I passed a kayak and an ark.

  13. Eng 31-0published at 7 overs

    Hales 23, Roy 8

Southee offers up a hint of width and Hales is on it quickly, slapping the ball over point and down into the boundary rope. Southee huffs and sticks to good old fashioned line and length, keeping Hales in defence.

Impeccably observed by everyone at the ground. Tim Southee will continue under windy, grey Cardiff skies.

England have looked competent so far this morning and retained their ability to score runs. They've seized the advantage early on.

  17. Eng 27-0published at 6 overs

    Hales 19, Roy 8

Boult chucks himself down to the floor to cut off Roy's hammered straight drive, leaping around like a fish out of water and getting a high-five from Martin Guptill in the process. Good over this from Boult, taking the pace off the ball slightly, and Roy throws himself through his shot too early before taking a single. Hales then rounds off the over by punching a full toss away for a couple.

No more than half-full in the Swalec stands at the moment, with coats and hats the order of the day. Feeling a little like Auckland in autumn rather than south Wales in summer time.

  19. Eng 23-0published at 5 overs

    Southee 3-0-10-0

Southee mixes up his pace nicely, sending down a slower ball bouncer that Hales tries to pull, before ending up swatting at thin air. A huge yell for lbw against Roy, but no dice from the umpire. That might have been sliding down leg, but it completely missed Roy's defensive push forwards. No foot movement either from the England man.

Some early boundaries for England - first Jason Roy...

And then Alex Hales got into the action.
