  1. 6 runs

    Eng 22-0published at 4 overs

    Hales 16, Roy 6

On the haka, Dan Vettori once said that "skinny guys with glasses shouldn't do the haka" when asked about that very subject. Good man, Vettori. That's glorious from Hales - six! The ball sits up nicely from Boult and Hales pulls, and pulls handsomely, into the crowd. Boult follows it up with a nice bouncer that Hales momentarily considers thwacking again, before opting to duck underneath it.

Peter Dykes: Why don't New Zealand do a hakka before the start of a game like the rugby team do?

Good question this. Anyone know the answer?

  3. Eng 14-0published at 3 overs

Lovely from Hales, a roll of the wrists to pick up a couple through mid-wicket. Southee's bowling wide, searching for a bit of swing, but there's not much doing. He goes wide and then pitches the ball up. Roy stays in line and pokes into the covers for another few runs.

It's not a great day to be searching for form, like Jason Roy is.

  5. Eng 9-0published at 2 overs

    Hales 5, Root 4

Here's Trent Boult. I love the Boult-Southee partnership. That's a hearty thwack from Hales, a brilliantly timed cut, and he'll pick up a boundary for it. Ooh, that's so close to lbw, but a big inside edge has saved Hales and he knows it, offering up a cheesy grin to the bowler. Boult stomps back to his mark, before carrying on targeting the pads.

Jason Roy doesn't really do watchful. He isn't a great defensive player - some players struggle when they have to think in a defensive way. The ball might grip early on and England might need all of their batting.

  7. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

Tim Southee will open the bowling, and has a strangled yelp for lbw against Jason Roy straight away! Roy then has a tickle outside off stump, the ball zipping past the bat as he pushes forward. It's proper windy out there. Shot! That'll do Roy's nerves some good, a step forward and driving on the up to the boundary.

The wind is going to play a big part in this match. The bowlers can lose their balance. The batsman, these days, will be doing everything they can to hit the ball into the wind. It'll be tricky for the captains. I'll be surprised if the England spinners get through 20 overs. If you bowl against the wind to a short, straight boundary, the batsmen can mis-hit a six.

Umpire Bruce Oxenford has just been singed by a firework. He's furiously patting as his head as the teams make their way out for the national anthems.

A cold, windy, grey early morn in Cardiff has given way to a cold, windy, white mid morn. But it's dry. For now. And in this edition of the Champions Trophy, that is a fact to be elevated and celebrated.

Dunno about you but I'm massively bored of watching it rain in this competition. Here's the forecast for today in Cardiff. Er...

  14. The story so farpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

England's bowlers stuttered against Bangladesh in the opening match of the tournament, as the Tigers struck 305-5.

However, a composed century from Joe Root, with 95 from Alex Hales and 75 from Morgan, saw England safely home.

New Zealand's own batting faltered when they took on Australia, with captain Kane Williamson making a century before the tail collapsed.

The Blackcaps lost their last seven wickets for 47 runs but had Australia on the back foot after their pace bowlers reduced them to 53-3 before the rain set in.

By the time Brendon McCullum's men pitched up in England later that year, there were signs of a team on the up.

England won the one-day series 3-2, making their first score of more than 400 at Edgbaston, and posting over 300 in four of the five matches.

It was the start of the process that's seen them become a confident one-day side - and the bookies' favourite in this tournament.

Shall we cast our minds back to 2015?

There's no other way of putting it - England's performance against New Zealand in the World Cup was utterly awful.

England were bundled out for 123, thanks to 7-33 from Tim Southee and a dreadful lower order collapse that saw seven wickets fall for 19 runs.

Brendon McCullum then did what Brendon McCullum does - smashed a half-century off 18 balls to set up a victory for New Zealand in 12.2 overs. Yup, the entire match lasted just 45.4 overs.

    Abject stuff.

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We'd have bowled first. We have one change - Adil Rashid comes in for Chris Woakes. Jake Ball takes the new ball today, hopefully he goes well. Ben Stokes is fit to bowl 10 overs, it's the best he's felt for a long time."

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "These tournaments are short and sharp and there's no room for mistakes. We want to be positive, look to attack from ball one and see where it takes us."
