  2. Pak 44-2published at 12 overs

    Morkel 4-1-6-2

The crowd cheers as a single is taken down to third man. They're captivated by this contest.

Morne Morkel is bowling a lovely line down the channel, mixing up length deliveries with the odd bumper. It's bubbling nicely - unfortunately, there is rain on the horizon.

You can feel the pressure of the Pakistan crowd, they're getting on Hafeez's back.

For my money, the best game in the last World Cup was the 150 plays 150 match between New Zealand and Australia.

In this tournament, this match takes the honours thus far. It's had everything - and all because the bowlers have a sporting chance.

Chris Morris, touching 88mph, makes it three maidens in a row.

Morkel has bowled fast, had the Pakistan batsman jumping around, he has two wickets. He needs to stay in the moment.

Morne Morkel keeps the pressure on with another maiden. The boy is special and probably a little under-rated in world cricket circles?

  7. Pak 42-2published at 9 overs

    Hafeez 1, Babar 1

You know that saying about setting off like a train? Don't trains actually start slowly and build up momentum as they gather steam?

Anyway, if Pakistan began like a train they've just found out there's a fallen tree on the track. They're going nowhere for the time being thanks to a Kagiso Rabada maiden.

The crowd is very quiet at the minute but Babar Azam is the man to get them going again.

  9. Pak 42-2published at 8 overs

Mohammad Hafeez, who appears to be the latest Benjamin Button-like character to play for Pakistan, is almost removed first ball. He fends one away from his body but there's nobody stationed under the helmet. If there was, Pakistan would likely be three down.

They've been given an opening and they're ramming down that door. Pakistan are gifting them the wickets and you can't afford to do that to the number one team in the world.

    Azhar c Tahir b Morkel 9 (Pak 41-2)

    Pakistan are getting Mork'd.

Azhar Ali doesn't help things when he guides a steep, wide delivery down the throat of Imran Tahir at third man.

That changes things ever so slightly. Proteas on the charge.

Comfortable catch. Big breakthrough, exactly what they needed but nice start for Fakhar and Pakistan.

But here's the batsman I like the most in the Pakistan line-up, Babar Azam. I played against him in the UAE and second ball boomed it straight over our heads for six.

    Fakhar c Amla b Morkel 31 (Pak 40-1)

The old dog puts the young whipper-snapper in his place. Morne Morkel, who has seen all of this before, bowls a sharp bouncer which smashes into Fakhar's helmet. The batsman grins, the bowler strides back to apply the finishing touches to the oldest set-up in the book. The next one is full and it's edged to Hashim Amla at a wide first slip.

Azhar Ali is a classy batsman, too. He's got a Test triple-hundred to his name. So when Kagiso Rabada drops short, he's quick to pull the young speedster to the boundary. Pakistan absolutely bossing this.

Similar to Follett (see 16:46) there is a story about a young Gladstone Small being told he needed his passport to get into Scotland, where Warwickshire were playing. As they approached Scotland the bus stopped and he was smuggled across the border in the luggage compartment amongst the kit bags.

Pakistan have this happy knack of unleashing an exciting new cricketer at a global tournament. It fascinates me that they can continue to produce so many naturally talented players despite the problems they face from a cricketing point of view.

Morne Morkel has been brought on to try and plug a leaky bowling attack. It works. Just three from the over.

South Africa know Azhar Ali but they don't know Fakhar and therefore can't set plans to him. The captain and bowlers need to get together and discuss where the best line of attack is to him.

  19. Pak 32-0published at 5 overs

Fakhar adds a quick single to Pakistan's total to end a blistering over. All good fun, this.

  20. Pak 31-0published at 4.4 overs

    Target 220

If the rain does come and Pakistan have completed 20 overs of their innings, they would need to be 49-0, 58-1 or 69-2 (or better!) to win the game on the DLS method.

They should have no problems in the run-scoring regard as Fakhar gets hold of Rabada and hammers him over long-on for six. The next ball is smited through point for four - stand and deliver style, in the manner of Marcus Trescothick.
