  1. Stevens and Northeast carry on the funpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Sussex 291 v Kent 304 & 335-5

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent at Hove

When Will Gidman fell for six shortly after the lunch break, it looked like the party may have been over for Kent, as they built a sizeable lead over Sussex.

But out walked Darren Stevens, at 252-5, bringing with him a figurative keg of orange juice, some balloons and a big cake, to carry on the festivities.

Sam Northeast has pushed on after scoring his first century of the season

Both he and Sam Northeast have batted aggressively to take the lead to 300 and beyond.

Northeast, now 130 not out, is now hitting sixes for fun.

You get the feeling a declaration may come half way through the evening session, leaving Sussex to chase a score between 400-450.

  2. Hampshire all out and Rossouw run out!published at 15:42 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Hampshire 438 v Middlesex 356

Rossouw run outImage source, Rex Features

That should have been a maiden Hampshire century for Rilee Rossouw, but he has been run out one short of 100 as he went for two to get him there.

Batting with an injured Fidel Edwards, he took on the throw but failed.

Hampshire are dismissed for 438 for a lead of 82 runs and that's an early tea at the Ageas Bowl.

  3. Coad traps Ambrose LBW for a duckpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Warwickshire 178 & 7-5 v Yorkshire 381

What an earth is happening with the Warwickshire batsmen?

Ben Coad gets his second wicket in three balls as he traps Tim Abromse lbw for a duck and the hosts are 7-5 at Edgbaston.

    Yes, you read that right...7-5!

  4. wicket

WICKET Cook (c Hildreth b Elgar) 110published at 15:37 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Somerset 209 & 174 v Essex 129 & 216-2 (target 255)

    Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features

And it's all over for Alastair Cook after his fine century for Essex.

Is that the slim chance Somerset need to force a late rally?

Cook pulls a short ball from Dean Elgar straight into the hands of James Hildreth at short mid-wicket and his 214-ball innings is at an end.

Essex still need another 39 runs.

  5. wicket

WICKET Hain (b Coad) 1published at 15:35 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Warwickshire 178 & 7-4 v Yorkshire 381

The rain break has done absolutely nothing to help the Warwickshire cause as Sam Hain is bowled by Ben Coad for one.

  6. Eckersely again delays the inevitablepublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Gloucestershire 466-8 dec v Leicestershire 259 & 129-5

    Bob Hunt
    BBC Radio Gloucestershire at Bristol

I think it's fair to say that if it wasn't for Leicestershire's Ned Eckersely, these two teams would be showered and at home by now.

Fresh from his 88 in the first innings, he has come to the Foxes' rescue yet again.

Tottering at 51-5, still 158 runs short of asking the home side to bat again, Eckersely and Ben Raine have added a 50 partnership to give something positive for the away side.

However, as long as the rain stays away, I can't see this going into a fourth day.

  7. wicket

WICKET Berg (c&b Malan) 43published at 15:29 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Hampshire 432-9 v Middlesex 356

While we've been waxing lyrical about Alastair Cook, Hampshire have been giving it some long-handle as they try and get a tidy lead over Middlesex.

Gareth Berg has been launching some long hits and has scored a breezy 43 off 51 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Dawid Malan finally dismisses him with a return catch to end a partnership of 86.

He then gets Brad Wheal caught behind the very next ball.

  8. Coming back on but for how long?published at 15:28 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Warwickshire 178 & 5-3 v Yorkshire 381

    Stephan Shemilt
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Play may be about to begin again, but for how long? It's still incredibly dark, the floodlights peer down from the menacing clouds above us.

Undeterred, Yorkshire have warmed up with gusto - all whoops and handclaps. It's miles more fun when you're winning.

Meanwhile, Warwickshire coach Jim Troughton dons his ceremonial headdress and continues to dance for rain.

  9. 100 runs

Century for Alastair Cookpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Somerset 209 & 174 v Essex 129 & 199-1

    CookImage source, Rex Features

Alastair Cook raises his bat as loud applause greets his century at Taunton.

He reaches the milestone by caressing Jack Leach through the covers for four.

The former England captain has batted with much ease and composure, after a couple tight lbw shout early on day three, as the Somerset bowlers have toiled away.

Cook's ton came off 202 ball, with 16 fours, and it is the 32-year-old's 57th first-class century.

The impressive innings leaves Essex needing just 56 to win.

  10. wicket

    WICKET S Curran (c Kerrigan b McLaren) 14published at 15:21 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Surrey 262-8 v Lancashire 470

More problems for Surrey as another wicket falls and their decline since lunch has been quite astonishing.

Liam Livingstone decides to change tact after an all-spin attack and turns to Ryan McLaren, who gets Sam Curran caught at square leg by Simon Kerrigan.

Surrey may be forced to follow-on at this rate.

  11. 50 runs

50 for Tom Westleypublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Somerset 209 & 174 v Essex 129 & 194-1

Tom Westley becomes just the second player in the match, after Alastair Cook, to make a half-century.

The Essex batsman reached his 50 off 87 balls with nine fours, as he's ably assisted Cook to lead the visitors within touching distance of victory at Taunton.

  12. Essex look on coursepublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

It's looking very good for Essex here.

Alastair Cook's presence in the side was important early last season and this serene performance suggests a similar effect in the new campaign.

Tom Westley spent a lot of time at the crease with Cook a year ago and he is there with Cook again.

Their century stand has kept kept the visitors firmly on course for their opening win.

Somerset's result pitch strategy, which worked so well last year seems to have backfired here.

This pitch has become easier for batting today which has suited Essex entirely.

  13. Resumption in Derbyshirepublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Derbyshire 281 & 38-0 v Northamptonshire 307

Play has got under way once again in Derbyshire. That match very much looks to be heading towards a draw in Division Two.

  14. Kolpaks get a helping handpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Hampshire 407-7 v Middlesex 356

    Rilee RossouwImage source, Rex Features

Rilee Rossouw is cutting loose and given Hampshire a lead.

But he has just survived a simple chance. An easy catch was offered to cover which was grounded, much to the amazement of the crowd, and the disgust of bowler Steven Finn.

Last night Kyle Abbott was given a reprieve when he looped an easy catch to gully. The phrase 'my grandmother could have caught that' was very apt. Abbott went on to score 56.

Both chances came off Finn's bowling.

  15. rain stops play

Planning to resume at Edgbastonpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Warwickshire 178 & 5-3 v Yorkshire 381

    ....right on cue Lee.

They've just said they will try and resume at 15:25 BST with a scheduled tea interval at 16:30 BST.

  16. Cook moves into the 90spublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Somerset 209 & 174 v Essex 129 & 175-1

    Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features

30 wickets fell in the first two days but the solitary scalp of Nick Browne on day three shows it had little to do with the wicket and far more to do with some mindless batting.

Alastair Cook has seemlessly moved on to 94, having batted calmly all day.

Somerset need to induce a collapse quickly or they're going to be on the end of big defeat.

  17. wicket

And another one falls to spin at The Oval.

Simon Kerrigan again in the wickets as he dismisses England winter tourist Zafar Ansari with one that pegs his leg stump back.

Spin certainly doing the trick for the Red Rose.

  18. rain stops play

Inspection due at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Durham 162 & 201-7 v Nottinghamshire 305

News of a possible improvement in the weather in Durham....

  19. Spin rattling through the overspublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Surrey 237-6 v Lancashire 470

Lancashire must be wanting to get out on the town early in London this evening.

Their spinners of Simon Kerrigan, Stephan Parry and now Liam Livingstone have been rattling through the overs since lunch.

There's been just 13 runs scored since lunch and only eight added in the past 10.

  20. Trego hits Westley on the neckpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

    Somerset 209 & 174 v Essex 129 & 162-1

Peter Trego's introduction to the Somerset attack sees one of his bouncers hit Tom Westley just below the end of the helmet around the neck area.

After a brief stop in play to be looked over by the physio, Westley dispatches Trego's next ball to boundary.

Essex's target is just 89 runs now.
