England captain Heather Knight: "I always knew we batted deep, our line-up is firing at the moment. It was a frustrating batting display, we got the momentum then would lose wickets. Brunt and Gunn batted well for us today.

"It was probably about a par score, we knew how deep Australia bat. It was our best bowling display, we were clinical. It was a brilliant game but a hard one to captain.

"We have two big games coming up, when you're in the habit of winning you want it to carry on."

So where does this leave us? Well after five games, no team has yet qualified for the semi-finals but England top the table.

They still have to face New Zealand on Wednesday and West Indies on Saturday.

Australia will play India and South Africa.

Player of the match Katherine Brunt: "It's always a show with England and Australia and I'm glad we can put on a performance today. I had fun, us girls down the lower order have had a lot of practice and I back us to do that.

"To finish with 259 gave us confidence to go out and defend it. As a bowler, I don't like playing on these flat pitches, the batters have it too good. But credit goes to all the bowlers.

"It's always nice to get one up on the Aussies but this is just one game and there are a fair few to come."

The player of match goes to Katherine Brunt, for her 45 not out, figures of 9-1-42-2 and taking two catches. Absolutely nobody can argue with that.

Well done England indeed. I had a feeling that this was going down to the wire, and that dodgy bit of fielding on the penultimate ball was just too much drama for one to take!

Jonassen swings high and for a moment I thought she got hold of it but it drops well short of the boundary, picked up by the fielder in the deep. The best game of the tournament, England win!

England have not beaten Australia in a World Cup match since 1993. That gives you a clear indication of how big this situation is.

Good start from Brunt, just one run from the first two deliveries. That brings Gardner on strike, a thick outside edge, well fielded by Tammy Beaumont running to the deep from point.
