  2. 'England are a batsman light'published at 12:55 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

This is not a panic-struck selection. Ballance's injury meant they needed another batsman, and given that Keaton Jennings is going to open, that rather ruled out Mark Stoneman.

Dawid Malan's well known for being a big hitter, so that's an interesting selection. He's had a decent first-class summer, but his career has been built around T20 cricket.

It might be that the Oval pitch takes some spin - there's a conversation about Moeen and Dawson. But you can't help but feel that England are a batsman light, the way they've played of late.

Meg Lanning is having a chat with the umpires and checking her watch as the first hint of sun comes out over Derby.

We're on shoulder watch with Lanning, an injury that's been giving her grief throughout the tournament. She's been joined now by her counterpart Mithali Raj.

It's the first time I can ever remember an inspection being brought forward by half-an-hour.

I've just watched an umpire trot out, head back inside, and then wander back out again.

The good news is they've brought the inspection forward by half-an-hour, so fingers crossed we'll get some play...

The good news is, all the covers are now off the pitch and the groundsman is charging up and down the wicket with the roller.

I say charging. It's more of a gentle plod.

Natalia: England like consistency so reckon they would've only dropped one of Jennings/Ballance. Ballance injury took it out of their hands.

Some news from the men's world, now, and Tom Westley and Dawid Malan have been added to the 13-man squad to face South Africa next Thursday.

    There's a men's Under-19 World Cup - is it time for a women's Under-19 World Cup?

Absolutely. It's a crucial age for keeping girls in the game at a time when they may be thinking about going to university - and it can be a crucial stepping stone towards the senior team, as it's a tough transition between county and international cricket.
