Another round of Championship action comes to an end with wins in Division One for new leaders Essex, Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Tom Westley's unbeaten century sees Essex end Surrey's unbeaten record, but match of the day is undoubtedly at Taunton where Yorkshire squeeze home by three runs after Somerset appeared to be heading for a first victory of the summer.

Division Two leaders Notts have to settle for a draw at Gloucestershire, but Sussex make light of their run-chase to beat Leicestershire.

Gloucestershire finally break the run of maiden overs with a single by Jack Taylor, but two overs later the game comes to an end.

Graeme van Buuren has 88 not out, Taylor is unbeaten on 26, and the home side can feel satisfied with their efforts after batting through the final day to thwart the Division Two leaders.

Notts, though, take 11 points and go 16 clear at the top of the table - although their closest pursuers, Kent, Worcestershire and Northants have a game in hand.

Three successive maidens. Gloucestershire lead by 13. Van Buuren 86 not out, Taylor 19 not out. Very little embellishment required.

If anyone has told Graeme van Buuren to get on with it if he wishes to reach a hundred, he's not showing any sign of it. He has passed 4,000 first-class runs in progressing to 86 not out, but it's partner Jack Taylor (19*) who is the one producing the boundaries. Gloucestershire now lead by 13.

After four games with positive results, it looks like this round of Championship matches is going to end with a draw as Gloucestershire bat out time against Division Two leaders Notts.

You would imagine the shaking of hands won't be too far off, but Graeme van Buuren would no doubt like to stay out there a bit longer as he's 83 not out.

Gloucestershire need three runs to wipe out their deficit.

Steven Mullaney leaves the field with a bloodied left hand. The Nottinghamshire batsman appears to have damaged a finger nail.

Notts fans will hope it's nothing serious with a One-Day Cup quarter-final against Somerset in Taunton tomorrow.

Essex return to the top of the table as Tom Westley helps himself to a four and a single at the start of a new Stuart Meaker over to see them safely to their target. He finishes on 108 not out, with Dan Lawrence unbeaten on 32, and their unbroken partnership worth 105.

It's Essex's first win over Surrey in eight Championship games and puts them six points clear of Yorkshire, with Hampshire, who didn't play this week, four points further back in third place.

The home side managed to add 35 to their overnight 253-7 during the morning session, but Essex always looked in control in their run-chase, even after the loss of Alastair Cook (31) to the final ball before lunch.

Their next Championship assignment is a home game against Warwickshire on 19 June, while Surrey must wait until the 26th for their trip to face Yorkshire at Headingley.

Surrey and Essex are the only two unbeaten sides in Division One, but Surrey won't be for much longer as Tom Westley hits three successive fours off leg-spinner Scott Borthwick.

Another boundary off Stuart Meaker in the next over carries him to his hundred, his second of the season and 18th overall in first-class cricket. It's going to be a match-winning innings too, with Essex just nine runs away from a maximum 24 points.

The final day at Guildford promised drama, but Essex are intent on frustrating those hoping for some final-act thrills. They need another 48 for victory as Gareth Batty finally hands the ball to paceman Stuart Meaker, who is straining at the leash, having only bowled three overs previously in this innings.

The faster the bowler, though, the faster the ball can disappear and Dan Lawrence and Tom Westley collect three boundaries between them as he starts his spell with an expensive 13-run opening over.

Gloucestershire have passed 200 and are now 26 runs behind Nottinghamshire.

Samit Patel tries to tempt the big shot ahead of the new ball, but neither Graeme van Buuren or Phil Mustard are interested. Patel gives up and tries a left-arm seamer but it's hit to the fence by van Buuren, who moves to 79 not out.

Sussex batsman Luke Wells made an unbeaten 90 to see them to a five-wicket victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road earlier this afternoon.

It followed a double century and a century since his return to action following a knee injury, but he is still suffering a few aches and pains and looking forward to a rest before their day-night Championship match against Gloucestershire, starting on 26 June.

"Physically, I'm quite ready for a break, I feel like a very old man at 26 years old. I wasn't physically prepared for the first two games and it'll be nice to have a little break and refresh," he told BBC Sussex.

"I didn't really have a pre-season as such,. It was just rehab and netting and then off you go. The knee is ok, I've had a couple of other niggles, I had a shoulder impingement and had to have a cortisone injection before this game, so that's why I say I feel like an old man."

Nottinghamshire are simply killing time before a last throw of the dice in the form of the new ball.

Back out at Guildford after tea and Surrey skipper Gareth Batty continues his spell. Five runs come from the over, four of them to Tom Westley from the final delivery.

It's still Scott Borthwick at the other end. How long will it be until Batty gives his pace attack a final dart?

Meanwhile, Surrey have recalled pace bowler Conor McKerr from his loan spell with Derbyshire. The 19-year-old took 10 wickets in Derbyshire's defeat by Northants this week and Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart says he is "developing nicely".

The One-Day Cup provides the county cricket focus for the rest of the week.

Tomorrow sees two quarter-finals with Somerset taking on Notts (play starts 11:00 BST) and Yorkshire at home to Surrey (14:00).

The winners of the first game will travel to face Essex (13:00) in the semi-finals on Friday, with Yorkshire or Surrey meeting at Worcestershire (11:00) at New Road the following day.

The prize for the two teams left standing after those four games - a trip to Lord's for the final on 1 July.

Gloucestershire have scored just 159 runs so far today - and that's including the 10 off Harry Gurney's wayward final over before tea.

It's been slow stuff, but the hosts - and the few fans still inside the ground - won't mind. Graeme van Buuren (67 not out) and Phil Mustard (24 not out) are very, very comfortable as Notts rotate their bowlers at will.

Time for a break at Woodbridge Road and it could be a timely one for Surrey, who need to come up with a plan to take eight wickets, with their opponents needing just 67 more runs for victory.

Tom Westley is 61 not out, Dan Lawrence has 12, and it looks like it would take either careless batting, or inspired bowling, or a combination of both, to deny them from this position.

Essex are not hurrying, and why should they with the prospect of third victory of the summer ahead. It's spin at both ends now from Surrey with Scott Borthwick given his first bowl of the game. Tidy enough by him so far, without being especially threatening. The visitors need another 72 win.

This is the third Championship match between the two sides at Guildford - the first two, in 1968 and 2009, were drawn.
