Summary

  • Tom Westley's unbeaten 108 sees Essex to an eight-wicket win over Surrey

  • Yorkshire beat Somerset by three runs in a thriller at Taunton

  • Lancashire inflict Middlesex's first defeat since 2015

  • Sussex beat Leicestershire by five wickets at Grace Road

  • Notts 16 points clear at top of Division Two after draw with Gloucestershire

  1. WICKET Footitt (run out) 0published at 11:46 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Surrey 399 & 288 (92.4 overs) v Essex

That's a horrible way for Surrey's innings to end as Mark Footitt responds to a call for a second run but is then sent back and run out by Neil Wagner.

Foakes finishes on 65 not out, but it has taken Essex only 10.4 overs to collect the three wickets they needed this morning and their victory target is 253.

If they get there, they will go top of Division One. If they don't, Surrey will.

  2. Yorkshire strive for breakthroughpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Yorkshire 202 & 283 v Somerset 224 & 121-4 (46 overs)

It hasn't got any easier for Steven Davies and Adam Hose at Taunton, with just 20 added to the Somerset total in the first 10 overs. Crucially, though, they are still together and know that Ryan Sidebottom and Steven Patterson cannot bowl indefinitely. Davies has 38, Hose is on 35 - 140 more needed by Somerset.

  3. wicket

WICKET Malan (c Davies b McLaren) 52published at 11:43 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Middlesex 180 & 180-8 (61.2 overs) v Lancashire 309

Another miserable Middlesex batsman, another catch for Alex Davies and another wicket for Ryan McLaren.

Dawid Malan is the unhappy party this time as he feathers a catch through attempting a cut shot from one with cut back from the South African seamer. In comes Tim Murtagh.

  4. Tense morning at Grace Roadpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Leicestershire 340 & 175 v Sussex 284 & 117-3 (38 overs)

    Adrian Harms
    Sports reporter, BBC Sussex

An early breakthrough for Leicestershire with nightwatchman Danny Briggs brilliantly caught at first slip by Paul Horton, as Clint McKay claims his fifth wicket of the match.

Luke Wells is battling hard for Sussex, his unbeaten 31 taking 92 balls, and if he can stay there Sussex ought to win their third Championship match in the last four

  5. wicket

WICKET Rampaul (c ten Doeschate b Wagner) 0published at 11:38 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Surrey 399 & 286-9 (91 overs) v Essex 435

Two wickets in three deliveries for New Zealand paceman Neil Wagner and the Surrey innings is almost done. Ravi Rampaul is guilty of over-ambition as he clips the ball to square leg. Every run Ben Foakes and last man Mark Footitt can eke out now could be crucial.

  6. wicket

WICKET Meaker (c Harmer b Wagner) 14published at 11:36 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Surrey 399 & 286-8 (90.4 overs) v Essex 435

Stuart Meaker hits a boundary off Neil Wagner to extend Surrey's lead for 250, but emboldened by that stroke, maybe he gets carried away and gives a catch to Simon Harmer at cover two balls later. Just two wickets left for Essex to take - but Ben Foakes is still there on 63.

  7. 50 runs

Fifty for Malanpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Middlesex 180 & 171-7 (58.3 overs) v Lancashire 309

Three balls after James Harris' departure (our commentators have confirmed that it was the pitch that irked him), Dawid Malan passes fifty from 113 balls.

The left-hander has batted serenely in Southport, but needs some support. Toby Roland-Jones, who considers himself an all-rounder, is in.

  8. wicket

WICKET Harris (c Davies b McLaren) 19published at 11:28 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Middlesex 180 & 169-7 (58 overs) v Lancashire 309

James Harris isn't a happy bunny. Whether his unhappiness is due to the pitch or his insistence he didn't edge the ball is unclear, but it's immaterial because he is out.

Ryan McLaren, who said Lancashire should take Tim Murtagh's lead with the ball, has his second wicket of the innings, with Alex Davies taking the catch. Middlesex are just 40 runs ahead and need plenty more to keep Lancashire at bay.

  9. Test of nerve for Somerset pairpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Yorkshire 202 & 283 v Somerset 224 & 108-4 (41 overs)

Five overs gone and, as Somerset probably expected, there have been very few loose deliveries so far from Ryan Sidebottom and Steven Patterson. Eight runs so far, the stand between Steven Davies and Adam Hose is now worth 59, and the home side need another 154.

  10. wicket

WICKET Roderick (lbw b Gurney) 2published at 11:20 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Gloucestershire 303 & 35-3 (13.5 overs) v Nottinghamshire 535-8d

Nottinghamshire are on the charge at Bristol.

Harry Gurney picks up his second wicket of the morning, trapping Gareth Roderick lbw. The Gloucestershire wicket-keeper faced just eight deliveries and his side are in trouble now. They trail by 197 runs.

  11. wicket

WICKET Briggs (c Horton b McKay) 14published at 11:10 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Leicestershire 340 & 175 v Sussex 284 & 105-3 (32.2 overs)

Sussex lose their nightwatchman in the third over of play at Grace Road as Danny Briggs edges to slip, where Paul Horton takes a fine catch. The visitors need another 127 to win as Stiaan van Zyl comes out to join Luke Wells.

  12. 50 runs

Foakes reaches half-centurypublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Surrey 399 & 261-7 (84 overs) v Essex 435

Well batted Ben Foakes, who brings up a 117-ball fifty with a single off Simon Harmer. Surrey lead by 225, and they would be in a precarious position without his contribution.

  13. wicket

WICKET Tavare (lbw b Gurney) 7published at 11:09 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Gloucestershire 303 & 31-2 (11.3 overs) v Nottinghamshire 535-8d

Nine balls into the morning and we have a first wicket. Will Tavare goes without scoring, pinned lbw by the left-arm seam of Harry Gurney.

After Samit Patel's mammoth innings of 257 not out Notts need quick wickets to make a game of this in Bristol. Can they get on a roll?

  15. Tidy start by Sidebottompublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Yorkshire 202 & 283 v Somerset 224 & 101-4 (37 overs)

Ryan Sidebottom, playing his 225th first-class match, bowls to Adam Hose, playing his second. It's a maiden over to start with at Taunton. Somerset still need 161.

  16. Lancashire chasing four wicketspublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Middlesex 180 & 156-6 (51 overs) v Lancashire 309

Ryan McLaren has the ball in hand for Lancashire as they chase the final four Middlesex wickets on day four at Southport.

Dawid Malan is 45 not out alongside James Harris (15 not out). Can the hosts make early breakthroughs?

  18. Pitch holds key at Guildfordpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Surrey 399 & 253-7 v Essex 435 (match resumes 11:00 BST)

    Rory BurnsImage source, Rex Features

Surrey batsman Rory Burns believes a wearing pitch at Guildford will be a major factor in deciding the winners of their game against Essex.

The home side had to work hard to build a 217-run lead on day three as Essex off-spinner Simon Harmer exploited a helpful surface to take 4-75 from 33 overs.

"The wicket is wearing, it's got a two-paced nature and there's a bit of spin there, so I think we can create 10 opportunities, it's whether we can take them, and how many in front we are," Burns told BBC Radio London.

"There's a length on that wicket where it's incredibly difficult to score, and with the two-paced nature of the pitch, you're never quite on it (as a batsman) unless it's either side of that length."

  20. 'It reminds you of the bad days'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Gloucestershire 303 & 30-1 v Nottinghamshire 535-8d

Samit Patel finished yesterday with a new career-best score of 257 not out under his belt. The Nottinghamshire all-rounder batted for 452 balls, but despite his marathon achievement putting his side in a strong position, his first thought was for the bad times.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I'm delighted. It reminds you of the bad days that you have with the bat.

"Days like this are when you have to make the most of it. I've been training pretty hard and my mindset has been pretty good for weeks now but I've not been converting as I should really.

"I was the most nervous on 256, needing one for the career-best but the boys were all really chuffed for me."
