    Notts 213 & 144-3 (35 overs) v Northants 141

Samit Patel's counter-attack comes to an end as Rory Kleinveldt bowls him. The Notts allrounder made his 64 from just 59 balls, hitting 12 fours and one stylish six.

Notts lead by 216 runs and have Northants right where they want them.

Surrey nightwatchman Stuart Meaker is finally dislodged by Middlesex as Steven Finn claims his second victim of the day.

Ben Foakes is the new batsman, but this game is now very much in the balance - a couple more quick wickets and Middlesex will be fancying their chances of a handy first-innings lead.

  3. Flurry of runs for Essexpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Essex 159 & 25-2 (9 overs) v Somerset 164

After eight runs from the opening seven overs, Paul van Meekeren goes for 16 off the opening over after lunch, with Nick Browne tucking in to move onto 23 not out.

Batting has proved incredibly difficult on this Chelmsford surface, with James Hildreth the only man to make a half-century so far. Essex need a partnership.

Liam Livingstone has hit an important knock for Lancashire today, but it is also a timely reminder for England's selectors.

Does the 24-year-old have a good chance of making the Ashes tour if he finishes the season strongly? His first-class average of 46.57is very impressive.

Or should he be given more time to develop? Let us know your thoughts using #bbccricket on Twitter.

  6. Play resumes at New Roadpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Worcestershire 363 v Gloucestershire 9-0 (5 overs)

The drizzle has relented at New Road, allowing play to resume. Cameron Bancroft and Chris Dent are out in the middle for Gloucestershire, while Josh Tongue and Joe Leach have the ball in hand.

  7. Injury problems for Northantspublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Nottinghamshire 213 & 131-2 v Northamptonshire 141 - lunch

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Samit Patel's undefeated 51 strengthened Nottinghamshire’s position on the second morning against Northamptonshire at Trent Bridge.

His runs were from only 43 deliveries, after Azharullah, who picked up five wickets on the opening day, struck with just the 13th ball of the morning, having Jake Libby caught at third slip by Rory Kleinveldt.

Kleinveldt picked up the only other wicket to fall, bowling Steven Mullaney for 28, but Northamptonshire’s hopes have been rocked by a couple of injuries.

Captain Alex Wakely has a damaged index finger and wicketkeeper Adam Rossington was struck on the thumb when a skiddy delivery from Azharullah wasn’t taken cleanly. Both players have left the ground for x-rays.

  8. Smith puts Glamorgan on toppublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Glamorgan 294 v Sussex 212-8 - lunch

    Adrian Harms
    Sports reporter, BBC Sussex

An excellent morning for Glamorgan who have taken five Sussex wickets on a chilly overcast day.

Ben Brown has led the Sussex resistance, reaching lunch 53 not out, but only Chris Nash with 42 has provided the necessary support as Sussex have struggled against accurate bowling.

Ruaidhri Smith has taken three of the wickets to fall, due reward for bowling an excellent line and length, and the hosts have the advantage at the interval on a pitch offering some help to the seamers.

  9. Livingstone batting 'with intent'published at 13:17 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Warwickshire 200 v Lancashire 239-4 - lunch

    Wilf Reeve
    BBC Radio Lancashire

Plenty of long sleeve sweaters were on show for a chilly first session, yet the cloudy skies didn't lead to the quick wickets that Warwickshire would have been hoping for.

Liam Livingstone has batted with real intent to reach 105 not out, combining crunching boundaries and running hard between the wickets.

Stephen Parry, his partner for the first hour of the day, did not bat look like a nightwatchman, apart from a large arm guard, and he played a couple of fine drives down the ground until he was tempted into a wild swipe at Jeetan Patel and departed for 43, just one short of equalling his highest first-class score.

  10. Meaker hangs on for Surreypublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Middlesex 247 v Surrey 95-3 - lunch

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Surrey's morning at the Oval with only one wicket falling and, following the 12 that went yesterday, that has come as something of a surprise - especially with Stuart Meaker resuming as nightwatchman this morning.

The consolation for Middlesex, who lost five wickets for 32 runs in the afternoon session yesterday, is that only 69 runs have been added and the wicket to fall was the dangerous Scott Borthwick.

The left-hander hung his head after driving at a ball, 10 minutes before the interval, from Steven Finn that wasn't there for it and just nipped away.

There has been assistance for the bowlers this morning but Surrey have batted with great patience and, with 39 overs on the ball, the Middlesex spinners will need to play their part in keeping control of the scoring rate.

  12. 100 runs

for Liam LIvingstonepublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Warwickshire 200 v Lancashire 239-4 (63 overs)

Magnificent by Liam Livingstone, who reaches a 151-ball hundred with a emphatic pull for six off Olly Stone from the penultimate ball before lunch. It's his second Championship century of the summer and Lancashire will now be hoping he can make it a 'biggie' and stretch their lead.

  13. Essex reach lunchpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Essex 159 & 8-2 (7 overs) v Somerset 164

    Craig OvertonImage source, Rex Features

Wickets have continued to tumble at Chelmsford, but Craig Overton's two before lunch have Somerset sniffing an opportunity.

Nick Browne and Ravi Bopara will resume after lunch in this game, which is being played in fast-forward.

  14. 50 runs

for Samit Patelpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Notts 213 & 131-2 (30.2 overs) v Northants 141

Well batted Samit Patel. The Notts allrounder has taken the game away from Northants, with his fifty coming from just 42 balls with nine fours and a six.

    Notts lead by 203 runs.

  15. wicket

WICKET Lawrence (lbw C Overton) 0published at 12:59 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Essex 159 & 8-2 (6.1 overs) v Somerset 164

A pair for Dan Lawrence! He falls to the same bowler and method of dismissal as Varun Chopra. He did at least play a shot, but Craig Overton nips one back into his pads, and despite being on the front foot, he's gone.

Overton has six wickets in the match now and has Somerset on the front foot. Ravi Bopara comes out just before lunch.

  16. wicket

WICKET Borthwick (c Simpson b Finn) 24published at 12:54 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Middlesex 257 v Surrey 89-3 (36.4 overs)

Middlesex, at long last, have their first wicket of the day at The Oval - but it isn't nightwatchman Stuart Meaker who departs. He's still there on 40 not out after Scott Borthwick edges to the keeper as he attempts an off-drive. Attritional fare this morning, with just 63 runs scored in the session so far.

WICKET Chopra (lbw C Overton) 1published at 12:49 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Essex 159 & 8-1 (4.5 overs) v Somerset 164

Why not play a shot Varun Chopra? The Essex opener is struck on the pad by Craig Overton shouldering arms, giving the umpire a perfect opportunity to send him back to the pavilion. Chopra has scored just 10 runs in two innings at Chelmsford.

How will Dan Lawrence fair? He made a five-ball duck in the first innings.

  18. Chanderpaul makes slick startpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Warwickshire 200 v Lancashire 213-4 (59 overs)

Shiv Chanderpaul wasn't renowned for fast scoring during his long international career for West Indies, though he could get a shufty on when in the mood. Today, it looks like he is in that same mood as back-to-back fours, followed by a single, off Olly Stone take him to 28 not out off 34 balls. Liam Livingstone now has 86 to his name and Lancashire look like building a handy lead.

  19. Patel and Pujara showing classpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Notts 213 & 109-2 (27.4 overs) v Northants 141

Cheteshwar Pujara and Samit Patel are classy batsmen and they're showing it at Trent Bridge. The Indian Test batsman has 26, while Patel has scored quickly to reach 34 from just 31 balls.

Notts lead by 181 runs, with eight wickets in hand and are in control of this match.

  20. Collingwood calls a haltpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

    Durham 480-9 dec (120.4 overs) v Derbyshire

Five balls after Paul Collingwood's dismissal at the Riverside, Chris Rushworth is bowled for a duck by spinner Imran Tahir. Captain Colly decides enough is enough and makes the declaration, leaving teenager Matty Potts unbeaten on 53. Now, what can he do with the ball?
