Villani adds a single, while Perry waits for the right ball and drills Ecclestone through the covers for four.

    Shrubsole 8-3-11-0

Even with a pace bowler like Shrubsole on, the fact that wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor is good enough to stand up to the stumps helps keep Australia in check. A maiden over ensues, while the TMS team are enjoying some Aussie ice creams with, let's say, some slightly suggestive names.

    Perry 18, Villani 13

Another freebie from England just after the break - Sophie Ecclestone serves up a peachy full toss which Elyse Villani expertly pulls for four. It's a rare lapse from the teenage Evertonian, who's impressed TMS's Jim Maxwell (and many others) on her Test debut. There's a moral victory for the bowler when Villani has a monster slog across the line and fails to connect.

SamC: The Aussies are wrong about many things. Calling an evening meal "dinner" is definitely high up the list.

    50 overs

Not a great start for England - Shrubsole's second ball after dinner is cut for two by Ellyse Perry, who clearly doesn't feel the cold - she's one of the few players out there in a short-sleeved shirt with no sweater. Shrubsole, for instance, dons a long-sleever at the end of her over.

Anya Shrubsole didn't bowl in the afternoon session, but she's going to get us going under the lights.

I think Sophie Ecclestone reminds me a lot of Daniel Vettori, with her left-arm sliders and flight.

England would have been happy with that session, picking up three wickets - Laura Marsh and Sophie Ecclestone were so consistent with their line and length, and the England fielders stepped up. But we saw a fair bit of dew in the last session last night, which quickened up the wicket a little.

Richard Clark: Comparison - final session yesterday, England scored 78 for 4. A repeat today would see Aus close on 162-7. I think we'd all take that.

  12. Adelaide update: 'Worrying' Cook, and Overton's pairpublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

This was not the sort of day England wanted with the Ashes less than two weeks away. After battling to 93-1 England collapsed to 124-7, losing four wickets for three runs at one stage.

Most worrying perhaps the form of Alastair Cook who made a scratchy 32. He’s only scored 47 runs in three innings on tour so far. If England are to compete in the Ashes you feel Cook will have to score big runs.

Mark Stoneman was solid again with a third successive half-century. but James Vince again got going before getting out for 29. Craig Overton completed a pair which is not what he wanted as he tries to convince the selectors of his all-round skills.

We are expecting news of Jake Ball’s scan at close of play tonight. If he doesn’t make the Gabba Test then Overton could make his Test debut although Tom Curran has arrived in Australia today and says he’s ready to play if required.

The Australians will be disappointed to have lost wickets in that session, and didn't really get the scoreboard moving in the right direction either. Now they have an opportunity with Perry and Villani comfortably in - can they get themselves set after dinner and keep posting the runs? They don't want to fall into the same pressure England did, when they didn't get the scoreboard moving, lost wickets and found themselves in a hole at the end of the day.

Nat Sciver to round off the middle session, with Sarah Taylor up to the stumps - but Villani negotiates it without any trouble and after losing those two wickets to Sophie Ecclestone quite quickly, Australia have made something of a recovery.

Yes, it's going to be Heather Knight to have a bowl - she's only sent down two overs so far in this multi-format series. She would be the first to describe herself as a part-time off-spinner, but her record suggests she's a bit better than that, and was one of the leading wicket-takers in the recent ICC Women's Championship. And she sends down a maiden over to Perry, quickly enough that we're going to have time for one more over before dinner.

Villani's an aggressive strokeplayer, we saw that when she opened in that Test at the Waca. If she can get through this awkward period before dinner, she might be able to cash in during the night session.

With the setting sun, there are slivers of shadow across the pitch, while some fielders are having to shield their eyes from the low sun as Sciver sends down her seventh over. Just one single added.

Heather Knight looks like she's warming up at mid-wicket - time for the skipper to have a trundle before the interval?
