If England had bowled like this first thing, we wouldn't be talking about Root's decision. That's where I feel sorry for Root. He thought it was the attacking decision, and yet England didn't bowl anything like this.

    Handscomb 35, Marsh 19

Australia really do have some bizarre batting techniques in their top six. Handscomb looks a walking wicket but still survives, playing and missing at another good delivery from Broad.

He missed that by a fair way. Maybe he's just fooling us all.

There is one over left. The new ball is available. Will England take it?

The crowd is now starting to thin as we head toward 10pm local time. James Anderson gets a bowl at Shaun Marsh and is doing what we have seen him do so often, bowling across the left-hander again and again and again. Will the inswinger come?

No it doesn't but Shaun Marsh gets himself in an awful tangle on the final ball of the over, looking to play a ball from outside off through mid-wicket with a cross bat. Somehow he misses it yet again and England groan once more.

The penultimate over is coming up.

Handscomb has been playing and missing very well!

Peter Handscomb is like a right-handed Gary Ballance.

  7. Aus 207-4published at 78 overs

Second ball available in two overs

The Handscomb grope outside off stump is back. We haven't seen that in a wile but England have their hands on their blue caps again. It's a lovely delivery from Broad that seams away but misses the edge.

To add to the frustration the right-hander wanders right across his stumps and flicks the ball down to fine leg for a couple a ball later. This is another important partnership now worth 46.

If Australia can get through to the end of play without losing any more wickets, they'll be very happy with the state of the game. If England can take one or two more, it'll be neck and neck.

It has been said before but I'll say it again. England could have done with Ben Stokes today. His energy, his aggression, would have been crucial. Anderson can't get this pink ball off the straight in these final overs. The crowd are bouncing around. It's a lively night.

News from across the Tasman Sea... England's Ben Stokes has taken part in his first training session with Canterbury Kings in New Zealand.

The all-rounder, who could play for Canterbury against Otago in a 50-over match on Sunday, said: "I hope I can get out there, do well, and contribute to Canterbury winning.

"It was nice to know a few faces - a few of the young guys came over to Durham as part of an exchange programme.

"It was nice, because it can be hard coming to a new team."

The England and Wales Cricket Board says Stokes cannot play for England as he waits to hear if he will be charged after an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in September.

  12. Aus 204-4published at 76.3 overs

Whack! Marsh brings up the Australian 200 with a single before Peter Handscomb chops away a cut shot behind square for four. That's one of the few he's hit out of the middle today.

  13. Aus 199-4published at 76 overs

Shot! As good as we have seen today from any batsman. Broad pitches the ball up and Marsh pushes beautifully down the ground. It deserved four but he only gets three.

James Anderson is going to comer back at the other end in the Adelaide darkness. England are pushing right until the end of this day.

That's a truly magnificent diving effort this late in the day from Craig Overton. He's a big lad and he's bowled a few overs. It's a long way down there.

  15. Aus 196-4published at 75.3 overs

Too leg side to start from Stuart Broad and he is punished at the third time of asking. Craig Overton puts in a brilliant dive on the deep square leg boundary but his arm is in contact with ball and boundary rope at the same time. Four more to Shaun Marsh.

  16. Postpublished at 11:12 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Joe Root heard me. Stuart Broad is back into the attack. There will be 81 overs today so six more. Can Stuey B nip one out?

  17. Aus 192-4published at 75 overs

    Handscomb 29, Marsh 10

Thanks Amy. Let's see if a change in the live-texter's chair brings a change of fortunes for England.

Still Craig Overton continues. I must say I'd like to see Anderson or Broad back on for the final few overs. The Somerset man has a short leg and a leg slip but Craig Overton's bouncers haven't quite caused the trouble he'd hope.

Shaun Marsh nabs a single on the final ball of the over to steal the strike.

It has been hard going. It hasn't been a free-flowing match. The pitch hasn't done as much as we thought it would.

If England can get a wicket or two in the final few overs they'll be pretty happy.

  19. Aus 190-4published at 74 overs

Marsh and Handscomb work singles from the first two balls of Moeen's latest over, before Handscomb takes a step back into his crease and blocks. That's a nice little shimmy from Handscomb, elbows high as he pushes the ball to cover while Marsh is kept quiet by a few fuller deliveries from Moeen.

It'll be Matt Henry to take you through the final five overs.
