    Overton 16-3-45-1

Oh! In the air from Handscomb as he guides an Overton delivery off his hips, but there's not a fielder there and the ball drops safely. A single brings Shaun Marsh on strike and he cuts a short and wide delivery with some oomph, but the fielder at points gathers the ball neatly. A leading edge from Marsh draws some shout from the fielders but again, it's along the ground.

In response to Stephan Shemilt's cake analysis with Ricky Pointing, I once advised Ken Livingstone about the pros and cons of a selection of deserts at a function. He chose the berry cheesecake - that was outstanding. I wonder if there are more celebrity cake encounters.

    Marsh 8, Handscomb 25

There's plenty of men around the bat for Moeen, as Peter Handscomb comes out of his crease and taps a delivery through Mark Stoneman's legs. This is better from Moeen, spearing the ball in a little quicker, and Handscomb prods and blocks to keep him out. He presses forward and pushes gently up to mid-wicket to steal a single from the final ball of the over.

A change for England - here's Moeen with some spin.

Shaun Marsh has been around Test match cricket for a while and has been dropped eight times but he does look a player. He is 34 so he has to make this opportunity count.

  6. Aus 185-4published at 71 overs

Short again from Overton, and Shaun Mash leaves well alone, before he tonks a full delivery rather uneasily back towards the bowler. Ooft, that's a hook and a half though from Marsh and it brings him four. It's short and it rises on Marsh but he watches it all the way, dragging the ball down and guiding it through the field. Elsewhere, Australia have beaten England 6-0 in a thoroughly entertaining Rugby League World Cup final in Brisbane.

This is one of the sketchiest 24s I have seen in Test cricket from Peter Handscomb.

  8. Aus 181-4published at 70 overs

Chris Woakes continues, and Peter Handscomb taps a half volley away for another couple of runs. I don't think I've seen him get forward to a single delivery today. He's more than happy to stay camped in his crease and defend with a straight bat.

  10. Aus 179-4published at 69 overs

Another tap off the toes from Peter Handscomb brings him another single, before Marsh hoicks himself out of the way of a short delivery. The Barmy Army crank it up a notch as Overton goes for another short ball, right into Marsh's ribs, but he plays it down with soft hands. Tidy stuff from the Test debutant.

This is my favourite wagon wheel for some time.

Peter Handscomb has scored one run in front of the wicket so far in this innings.

    Woakes 14-2-48-1

Short from Chris Woakes, and Shaun Marsh controls it nicely to pick up two. Steve Smith is still in his whites up in the dressing room, and he still looks irked by the whole situation. Oh, that's close from Woakes! Marsh goes for an expansive drive but he can't time it, and the inside edge goes through his legs and just about misses the stumps. He shoulders arms to the next one, and lets it go through to Bairstow at knee height.

Craig Overton will continue, as he angles a ball in towards Shaun Marsh, who hoists his arms above his head before working a single. Oh, that's close for England! Overton uses that extra bounce to surprise Handscomb, who ends up driving uppishly and just manages to parry the ball past gully. It was in the air briefly but it went quickly past the slips, and the ball races away for four.

This is England's chance. They have to grab this moment. They have to win it well.

  16. Aus 171-4published at 66 overs

    Handscomb 17, Marsh 1

Chris Woakes falls for the Peter Handscomb shuffle yet again as Handscomb goes across his stumps and helps another full delivery off his pads and through fine leg for a boundary. He keeps the next delivery off his pads before expanding his repertoire to include a cut shot, but a cannily placed fielder cuts the ball off. The final ball of the over is again bundled off the pads in an awkward fashion, and Woakes shakes his head in disbelief.

I have a confession to make, folks. I missed that Steve Smith wicket as I'd had to run away from the desk for a second. I've still not seen Steve Smith get out in this Ashes series. Sorry.

Anyway. We've got 16 overs left in the day and give England a chance to press their advantage. Here's Chris Woakes.

The reason Shaun Marsh was brought back into the Australian team was for this kind of situation.

    Overton 12-2-34-1

That's a fine bouncer from Craig Overton to say hello to Shaun Marsh, as the batsman sways and watches the ball just skim past his grille. Steve Smith is brooding up in the dressing room. It's the first time he's been bowled in a Test in Australia since 2015. Marsh jabs his bat down on a fuller delivery before half chasing a ball that trails down the leg side. Maiden.
