James Ballantyne: Take a bow Overton! Your Test career has officially peaked. Smith bowled!

Ruth Brooksbank: What a great first Test wicket for Overton!! Couple more before close of play please.

Rachel T: Just shouted "SMITH'S GONE!" startling everyone else enjoying a quiet hot chocolate in Lincoln Cathedral refectory.

Oh! Four! That's clever from Peter Handscomb. He shuffles across his crease, letting Chris Woakes thinks he's in with a shout of an lbw, before he clips the ball away for a boundary through fine leg. Woakes can't believe it, and he's even more infuriated when Handscomb gets completely squared up by a leg stump delivery. It looks horrible, and yet it's weirdly effective so far.

"Who was your first Test wicket?"

"Oh, you know. Just Steve Smith. In an Ashes Test. At a time when everyone thought he was going to bat until eternity. No big deal."

    Well played, Craig Overton.

The look of disbelief on Steve Smith's face when that delivery cracked into his stumps. Even he couldn't believe someone had actually got him out. He was late on that delivery from Overton.

The England fans have cranked the noise up another notch, willing their team on. Shaun Marsh furiously patters his feet up and down, making Overton wait at the top of his mark. His first delivery is nice, angling in, but Marsh plonks a foot down the wicket and pushes the ball away to get off the mark. Overton bangs in a short ball and hurries Peter Handscomb, who fends the ball away.

It was a little bit of a cutter from Overton. It almost spun.

Steve Smith is out. I repeat. Steve Smith is out.

Now England have to really push. This is their chance to get back into this Ashes series.

Steve Smith is out! It's Craig Overton's first Test wicket!

A huge moment in this match and England know it. It's Overton's first ball of a new spell and it's on a decent line and length. Smith prods forward and the ball squeezes through bat and pad and onto the stumps. Overton wheels away in celebration and is mobbed by his England team-mates. What a moment.

England are wearing the armbands in tribute to first-class umpire Russell Evans, who died last night.

The area in front of the scoreboard is packed with people having a bit of a party. Lovely to see. Steve Smith misses out as Chris Woakes serves up an inviting half volley, and Smith cracks it straight to a fielder at cover. Smith works a single before Woakes hammers in a delivery at Peter Handscomb's toes.

England must stay patient. In this conditions if you get one you can get two or three.

  10. Aus 160-3published at 61 overs

Peter Handscomb isn't moving if he doesn't have to. He hangs back and straight bats a delivery from Broad that rises on him, before Broad whistles in a shorter ball. Handscomb, caught off guard, swings his arms high above his head, the ball creeping above his bat and through to Bairstow. There's a half shout from Broad, before he turns round and offers Handscomb some advice on how he should be playing that. A maiden.

This is a crucial half an hour of play. The ball has just started to nip about. Handscomb is looking uncomfortable and Smith agitated.

  12. Aus 160-3published at 60 overs

    Smith 39, Handscomb 8

Too short from Chris Woakes first up, and Steve Smith carves him away for an easy two. There's a yell of frustration from Smith as he misses out on another gimme, smashing a short delivery straight to a fielder, before Woakes spears in a fuller delivery and Smith smashes the ball into his boot. That's better from Woakes, pitching it up, but a rubbish bouncer that Smith barely has to move to avoid rounds off the over.

Chris Woakes is going to replace James Anderson. He has to back up Anderson's good work here, and not offer up any freebies.

Broad is furious with rage. It is almost as if he is saying 'how is this player able to share a cricket pitch with me?'

  15. Aus 158-3published at 59 overs

Another play and miss from Peter Handscomb, who is so deep in his crease he might as well get a chair out and set up camp there. There's still a hint of away movement from Broad, before Anderson strolls in to offer some advice. Broad and Root both wave their arms around, moving the fielders, before Handscomb gets beaten by a gorgeous delivery. He's so far back onto his stumps and the push forward is tentative, and he somehow manages to avoid edging the ball. Broad bangs in a short ball as a reminder, and that's another maiden.

    Anderson 17-2-38-1

England do seem to think that if they can wind Smith up, they've got a better chance of getting him out. It worked when he first came in but he looks a bit more secure now, to my eye. He gets forward and helps a delivery away from his leg stump, before he carves a full delivery away. Ooh, there's a bit of extra bounce for Anderson, and it strikes Smith somewhere quite uncomfortable. A maiden from Anderson, and a good one to boot.

It is like a couple of fellas waiting for a bus. They're standing right next to each other.

  19. Aus 158-3published at 57 overs

Anderson and Smith are exchanging a few pleasantries as Smith, at the non striker's, makes friends with the England bowler hovering right under his nose. Aleem Dar, stuck in the middle, ends up guiding Smith away. Still, at the other end, Peter Handscomb isn't having much fun. He throws a loose drive at Broad's first delivery and just about avoids sending an edge through to Jonny Bairstow, before another leading edge squeezes through the slips and away to four. Anderson, arms crossed, lips pursed, looking every bit like a sulky child, pointedly ignores Smith, before he ends up running into him as he tries to field a ball.
