The crowd of 55,317 was a record for cricket at the Adelaide Oval. It beat the 50,962 that packed into the ground for the second day of the 1933 Bodyline Test.

  3. Done by the breakpublished at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

The drop by Mark Stoneman didn't cost England too many runs - nine in fact.

Usman Khawaja couldn't help waft his bat to a wide James Anderson delivery and could only send a catch James Vince's way for 53.

"That was a nice neat catch," Geoffrey Boycott said on TMS.

"It works so often after a break. You just start your innings again as if you are 50-odd. You should just make yourself have a few sighters and then play."

  4. Was it the armour?published at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

This wasn't a wicket but should've been. The short-ball trap had been set and Usman Khawaja obliged by top edging a pull shot to fine leg.

Mark Stoneman ran in and should have scooped up a catch with Khawaja on 44 and the Aussies on 109-2.

But nooooooo, the ball went through his grasp and the chance goes begging.

"You've got to take them - it was pretty straightforward. Stoneman had to run 15 or 20 paces," Phil Tufnell told TMS.

"You're taking those eight and a half or nine times out of 10."

He added: "Those shin pads (Stoneman was wearing) make you move like you have got armour on."

  5. How's statpublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

England had gone 83 overs without taking a wicket, between Joe Root's dismissal of Nathan Lyon on day three at the Gabba and Cameron Bancroft's run-out in Adelaide.

  6. Did Bancroft's heavy head work against him?published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

So, let's rewind and take a look at today's wickets.

First to go for Australia was Cameron Bancroft. He was keen to let everyone know after the first Test that having a heavy head helped him deal with his bump of heads with Jonny Bairstow.

But it seems it might not have work in his favour when he was sent back by fellow opener David Warner and was run out by a direct Chris Woakes hit.

The pair ignored one of cricket's golden rules - don't run off a misfield - as they were all yes, no, yes, no following Moeen Ali's fumble and it was Bancroft who had to pay the price.

The ball has done a little bit but England bowled too short. Even when they were on top, it looked pretty but it wasn't effective. The way they came out after the rain... why couldn't they have bowled like that before?

  9. Did Root take wrong option?published at 12:25 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

One of the talking points of the day is whether England captain Joe Root made the wrong decision by putting the Aussies into bat after winning the toss.

It seems not with his side only take four wickets but it seems from the TMS box that he was let down by some of England's bowling.

Craig Overton speaking to BT Sport, asked about England's decision to bowl first: "There were overhead skies and we felt we could get early ones. We bowled well all day and didn't get the nicks we deserved."

I think Root's decision was a positive, pro-active thing. I'm backing him. The bowlers let him down.

Craig Overton and Phil Tufnell are both backing the big decision from the start of the day - Joe Root's decision to bowl first after winning the toss.

  17. 'Classic day one'published at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja speaking to BT Sport: "[It has been] Pretty good. It will be a big hour and first session tomorrow. If these guys can keep going and set up a nice total it will go a long way to winning this game.

"The pink ball always tricky in situations here. It is a bit slow and a bit two-paced. That might change as the game goes on. It was classic day one."

It did seem easy to get to Smith. He didn't look so impregnable like he did in Brisbane. That's one plus point for England to take with them this evening.

More from Craig Overton, speaking to TMS: "We're pretty happy. We'd have liked a few more wickets. There's still a bit of work to do tomorrow morning.

"It's a little bit slow. It might nip a little bit more under lights but they all seem to be a bit on the slow side over here. I don't know if that's a plan or if we're just not finding the pace they are."

Whoever gets the majority of time bowling in the dark, I think will come out on top of this. Let's see how those big quicks bowl in the daylight hours as that could be the difference.
