  1. Aus 152-3published at 56 overs

    Smith 35, Handscomb 4

That's a belter from James Anderson. It's another teasing delivery, the ball just sliding past the outside edge of Peter Handscomb's bat as he pushes forward. Handscomb, wisely, takes advantage of a friendly delivery on his hips to get a single, before Smith works a full one off his pads for another. There's then a big yelp from England as they strike Smith on the pad, but he's been smashed right on the top of his pads. Smith has a wry grin at Anderson, which he'll love. The replay shows the impact was outside the line, and it was missing the stumps. Other than that, it was a great shout.

Steve Smith has now passed 3,000 runs as captain in 49 innings. Don Bradman did it in 37 innings and Mahela Jayawardene 48. Graham Gooch also did it in 49 but Smith averages 73 as captain.

  3. Aus 149-3published at 55 overs

The pink ball has a sort of highlighter glow at the minute. The shadows are lengthening on the pitch and Broad, arms and legs pumping, keeps on hugging Steve Smith's off stump. Smith, much as he did at the Gabba, just ignores it. A leggy delivery is helped on its way by the Australia captain, before Handscomb, still on zilch, comes on strike. He gets squared up by Broad but the leading edge flies past the slips, and Handscomb can jog through to get off the mark.

  5. Aus 145-3published at 54 overs

I thought Anderson bowled well in that middle session without much reward. He found a much better length than he did with the new ball. Steve Smith ignores the first few balls before he gets slightly squared up by a straighter delivery, his hands twisting as he bunts the ball down the field. Shot! That's nicely timed by Smith, a cover drive that slides between two fielders, but Craig Overton chases it down to keep it to two. Handscomb, again facing the final ball of the over, blocks.

We're in for a really interesting final session.

  7. Aus 142-3published at 53 overs

    Smith 29, Handscomb 0

There's some extra stomp in Stuart Broad's step as he comes running in, and Steve Smith carves him away for a couple. Smith lets a delivery sail past his stumps, before wandering off to short leg to compose himself. He's got James Anderson glowering at him from silly mid on, but Smith pushes and runs to add another one to the total. Peter Handscomb, wisely, shoulders arms to the final two deliveries of the over.

Here's Stuart Broad. England's two best bowlers, coming in to Steve Smith, under the Adelaide lights. That's what you're here for.

Peter Handscomb has had a lot to say about Jonny Bairstow this week. He was quiet at Yorkshire last season and now he is mouthy once he's back in Australia. It's in their DNA.

  10. Aus 139-3published at 52 overs

    Anderson 14-1-30-1

Right, can England force their way through Australia's middle order? Peter Handscomb sees off his first delivery from Anderson but the final ball of the over is a beauty, just nipping past Handscomb's outside edge. The Barmy Army applaud as Anderson collects his jumper from the umpire.

That was a nice neat catch. It works so often after a break. You just start your innings again as if you are 50-odd. You should just make yourself have a few sighters and then play.

Gone! Four balls after the break!

That's lovely from James Anderson, floating a delivery up temptingly for Usman Khawaja. He shapes to drive and ends up nicking it to gully where James Vince, moving to his left, takes a good, low catch.

Khawaja looks thoroughly miffed as he walks off.

I find Steve Smith fascinating. He goes through his pre-delivery rituals before he taps his bat on the ground.

It'll be James Anderson to get us going after the interval.

Cricket! We're about to have some.

England come skipping onto the field. Well, sort of. They look a bit downcast, but they've got about two hours to have a go at Australia under the lights.

They're followed by Usman Khawaja, resuming on 53, and Steve Smith on 23.

A few people are asking why we're calling this dinner, rather than tea. That's simply because the first interval, which is shorter in a day-night match, is called tea. This one is longer, and it can't be called lunch because, er, it's later on.

It was called the dinner break during England's day-night Test against West Indies earlier this year. It's like being back at school.

The ground staff are taking the covers off! It's still windy out there, and they have a real battle on their hands to keep hold of the sheet, but nevertheless, it's coming off.

You can't put a team in to bat at this level. Just shows how frightened England are of their bowling.

England went 83 overs without taking a wicket, between Joe Root's dismissal of Nathan Lyon on day three at the Gabba and Cameron Bancroft's run-out in Adelaide.
