  1. Aus 259-5published at 99 overs

Wide from Moeen first up, and Shaun Marsh, looking to cut, ends up with one hand off the bat as he tries to crack it away. That's a long hop from Moeen, and Tim Paine cracks it away for just a single. That brings up Australia's 50 partnership from 102 deliveries. Better from Moeen, bringing Marsh forward, and he inside edges onto his pad. Oh, and that's a genuine edge from Marsh, pushing forward once again, but it drops just short of Joe Root at slip!

There were 48 runs scored in that first half of the session, for the loss of just one wicket. Here's Moeen.

This is a moment when the captain has to keep the players up. The bowlers have done very well but just haven't had any good fortune.

On the whole they have bowled a lot of good balls and the batsmen haven't nicked them.

We're going to have some drinks in Adelaide, so you've got time to stick the kettle on.

For those of you on Ben Stokes watch - he's bowled eight overs for 41 runs and looked in a bit of discomfort after bowling a bouncer. The scorecard is here.

OK, I say this in the knowledge that it's sub-zero in the UK at the moment, but that is what you expect in December. It's certainly not a moan, either. It's just that you don't expect to need a jumper and a jacket in Adelaide.

  6. Aus 257-5published at 98 overs

Oh! Woakes finds Paine's outside edge straight away, Paine just pressing forward rather awkwardly, but the ball bounces before it reaches the slip. Paine grins at Woakes before chasing a leggy delivery. He's been a touch ruffled by that strike to his finger, which isn't surprising, after the strife it's given him for seven years. Another Woakes delivery nips back in to Paine, bouncing over the top of the stumps, and Paine, wisely, leaves it alone. A maiden.

A bit of background on Tim Paine's finger, for those of you who might not be aware. He broke his right index finger during a charity match in 2010 - the same year he made his Test debut - and it's since required seven surgeries and three bone grafts.

Chris Woakes is about to come on for his first bowl of the day.

Is there a hole in Shaun Marsh's bat?

  9. Aus 257-5published at 97 overs

Tim Paine is staying more circumspect but he lets out a shout as he's struck once again on the hand. There's some extra bounce there for Craig Overton, the ball hitting the shoulder of the bat and cracking Paine's finger as he tries to turn it away. Paine's strolling around at the non striker's end, hand on head, trying to get his composure back, while Overton beats Marsh's bat with consecutive deliveries. It's absorbing stuff at teh minute.

    Marsh 30, Paine 33

Ooh, Shaun Marsh could be struggling as Tim Paine drops the ball and calls him for a single, but Dawid Malan isn't the quickest to move and Marsh makes it. James Anderson pushes a few deliveries temptingly on Marsh's off stump, and he ignores them, before keeping a straight ball away from his pads with a tentative push. Anderson grins to himself as he saunters back to his mark.

Tim Paine changes his gloves and shakes his fingers around in front of the physio. He puts the gloves on a little gingerly, but it's just running repairs.

That was like a tennis ball. That is the only one in the match I have seen that went enormously over the batsman's head.

  14. Aus 255-5published at 95 overs

A bouncer from Craig Overton and it absolutely flies over Jonny Bairstow's head and down to the boundary. Dawid Malan charges after it and dives, but he ends up clattering into the rope, and Aleem Dar signals that'll be four byes. The Australian bowlers will have just woken up in the dressing room after that ball. It didn't half take off.

Another delivery rises and strikes Paine on the hand as he drops it away for one. Paine inspects his finger warily as he gets to the other end. In fact, that's struck him near enough on the index finger - the one that's caused him so much grief throughout the years - and he signals to the dressing room for the physio.

  16. Aus 248-5published at 94 overs

    Anderson 25-4-63-1

It's much more entertaining when people are rubbish at DRS than it is when they're good at it. Anderson, cutting a thoroughly disgruntled figure, beats Tim Paine with a corker, a delivery that seams away as Paine pushes forward. He's bowled much better from the Cathedral End. Paine edges another ball down along the ground before he comes charging down the wicket and realise Shaun Marsh ain't moving. Stuart Broad swoops and throws but Paine is back in time, and the throw is wide. Anderson beats the bat once again, before Paine nabs a quick single from the final ball of the over.

Aren't batsmen lucky to have DRS these days?

  18. Aus 247-5published at 93 overs

    Paine 28, Marsh 30

Another big shout, this time from Craig Overton, who is back-pedalling furiously as he pleads with Aleem Dar. Joe Root asks him and then bursts out laughing. There's movement back in from Overton but once again, it's struck Paine high on the thigh, and Hawk-Eye shows it's going well over the stumps. Still, good pressure from England, although it's reaping absolutely nothing, other than some jeers from the crowd.

Had those not been reviewed, Anderson would have taken two wickets in seven balls. Fine margins and all that. Craig Overton will continue from the other end.

  20. Aus 243-5published at 92 overs

Oh, and Anderson strikes Tim Paine on the pad straight away! Joe Root comes in, arms aloft, and decides against it, and with good reason - there's a fair old inside edge on that from Tim Paine. Paine then works a single from the final ball of the over, and then Anderson comes wandering down for a chat with him. It's all go.
