This is a counter-attack from Tim Paine. He has seen it is happening for England. A bit of swing and seam. He's trying to get some runs quickly by looking to be ultra positive and get up to 300.

  2. Aus 234-5published at 86 overs

    Marsh 29, Paine 16

Four! That's nice work from Shaun Marsh, greeting a full and wide Stuart Broad delivery with a fine drive that goes whizzing away to the boundary. This is good work from Australia, putting England under pressure, and Marsh steals a quick single to keep Broad on his toes. There's still danger there, though, for Australia, as Tim Paine presses forward and watches another delivery skim past the edge of his bat. That scoreline is very aesthetically pleasing.

If Australia get anything under 300 England would be happy. 280 would be greedy.

  4. Aus 228-5published at 85 overs

That's a belter of a delivery from Anderson to start his next over, bringing Tim Paine forward and just beating the outside edge of the bat as the ball moves away from him. Paine times his response to perfection, picking up a short delivery and hoicking it over mid-wicket for four. Root instantly sends a man down to deep mid-wicket, but Paine carves a wide delivery up and over for another boundary. He went hard at that.

Three overs in and England have already bowled more good balls than they did in the first three hours yesterday.

  6. Aus 220-5published at 84 overs

    Marsh 24, Paine 7

Moeen, currently plonked in that close catcher position, stops a delivery running away and then instantly shakes his hand in a bit of discomfort. Marsh lets a wider delivery go through to Jonny Bairstow, before he clips off his pads and away for a lovely boundary. Right idea from Broad but it was too straight and Marsh turned his wrists nicely to bunt it away.

That was a great delivery. A bit of bounce and seam away. Stuart Broad is on it this morning.

  8. Aus 216-5published at 83.2 overs

Oh, they like that! There's a noise as Shaun Marsh presses forward to Stuart Broad, but it's ball clipping thigh, and Chris Gaffaney shakes his head. There's definite movement from Broad there and Marsh was just a bit flat footed, prodding away at that.

Matt Roberts: Great start. Broad has been comfortably our best bowler in this game. Needs the others to match his intensity.

Ooh, there's swing there for Anderson as he squares Tim Paine up, turning him around, but the leading edge rolls past gully and Paine can sneak a couple. That's the sort of delivery that did for Paine at the Gabba. That's, er, less impressive from Anderson. Short, trailing down leg and Paine helps it away to the boundary. In fact, this is too short from Anderson. Paine gets slightly turned around again by a decent length delivery, but he sways well out of the way of the inevitable bouncer that goes through to Bairstow at a decent height. Anderson admonishes himself as he tugs his jumper back no.

Here's James Anderson to, presumably, do more of the same.

England have got to make use of this. Get two in the first five overs and get moment for the day.

    Broad 20-7-40-1

Here's Tim Paine, and he's off the mark straight away with an uppish sort of flick off the pads for one. Looking at the replay, Stuart Broad got right up into Peter Handscomb's face after that wicket. One for the match ref to look at, I'm sure. This is a fine over, another full delivery nipping away from Shaun Marsh, who tentatively prods forward. Broad's got that game face on.

Pitch it up to Peter Handscomb! He can't keep playing with a technique like that.

He has done a good job for Australia but England will be really delighted with that. The ball is doing a bit.

    Gone!

What do you know, a pitched-up delivery with a new ball has done for a batsman. That's lovely work from Stuart Broad, getting a full delivery to move back into Peter Handscomb, and it strikes him bang in front of the stumps.

Handscomb has a brief natter with Shaun Marsh, who shakes his head, and off he goes. What a start for England!

That did nip away. Handscomb was beaten.

  17. Aus 209-4published at 81.1 overs

It'll be Stuart Broad, with a ball that is one over old in his mitts, to get today's play going, with Peter Handscomb to face it.

Ooh, and it's a nice one too, with just a hint of away movement as he defends from deep inside his crease.

We're about to have some cricket.

It seems to me that there is a potential for a match-winning - or match losing - hour in that final session each day.

If some of the bowlers get their tails up and come roaring in, there's the potential for a real calamitous session for a batting team.

  20. 'Winning the toss doesn't define who wins the match'published at 03:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2017

Australia bowling coach David Saker, speaking to ABC: "It was a great day for us. It was really tough under lights and to only lose four wickets was a pretty good day.

"I can understand where England are coming from [opting to bowl first] but for me, especially in Australia, winning the toss or losing the toss doesn't define who wins the game. It's the team that plays the best.

"We toughed it out and played really well so, at the end of the day it probably does look a bit silly, but I understand where they're coming from. That could have been their day."
