  2. Aus 141-3published at 27 overs

The average score batting first in the last 10 matches at the Gabba is 271 but, having been 64-0 after 11 overs, Australia will be disappointed with this - although they have batting to come.

Just the one six from Finch thus far, but he cuts Moeen for a welcome four and has now moved on to 72.

  4. Aus 133-3published at 26 overs

Thanks Jack, the sun baking down in Brisbane and Joe Root, sporting a haircut as neat and tidy as his immaculate batsmanship, has his dark glasses on. Joe blots his copybook with a waist-high full toss but Marsh makes no contact with his free hit opportunity and the Test captain has 2-13 from his four overs to date.

This pitch has deceived a number of people, including the Australian camp, because they weren't expecting it to spin like this. It's not spinning massively, but enough.

  6. Aus 129-3published at 25 overs

So England miss out on two chances there but that was another canny over from Moeen Ali, the spinners doing a good job of restricting Australia here.

That's the halfway point of the innings, so I'll hand over to Jamie Lillywhite...

  7. dropped catch

Finch dropped on 60published at 24.2 overs

It's a really tough chance but Buttler has dropped Finch on 60.

Moeen gets one to catch the edge and it zips through and deflects off Buttler before he can get his hands to it.

If memory serves, Finch was dropped on 60 by Moeen before going on to make a century at Melbourne.

  8. Not outpublished at 05:05 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

Sure enough that first angle is enough to prove Mitchell Marsh just about had some part of the bat in when the bails were removed.

From one angle he looks in by an inch, from another Marsh looks in trouble.

This will likely be not out on balance...

  10. Umpire reviewpublished at 24.1 overs

This is tight. Australia go for the second run, the throw is straight to Moeen above the stumps, the off-spinner whips off the bails as Mitchell Marsh stretches to make his ground.

Travis Head's hands were way out in front of him and he just poked it back to Joe Root.

  12. Aus 124-3published at 24 overs

    Root 3-0-9-2

That was a frankly woeful innings from Head, who frantically tried to score off everything but made seven from 18 balls before tamely chipping it straight back to the bowler.

Finch is looking in fine fettle though - guiding a deft slice through third man off that over before Head's dismissal.

Joe Root is a very canny operator, obviously a world class batsman himself and can think ahead what the batsmen want and don't want.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 23.5 overs

    Head c&b Root 7 (Aus 124-3)

Add another victim to that list! Travis Head's manic innings comes to a swift end as he chips it back to Joe Root, who calmly takes the catch.

Root wheels away in amused celebration, the Test captain proving to have a golden arm in the ODI.

  16. Aus 119-2published at 23 overs

Head flicks off his legs, runs one, hesitates and then decides on the second - Bairstow runs in and throws down the stumps but Head had made his ground.

The number four doesn't look settled at all though - chipping the next just short of cover. An ugly heave at a wide one follows.

  17. Aus 115-2published at 22 overs

Yeesh. Head tries to flay Root through the covers but under edges it into his own foot. Head was out chopping on at Melbourne and could have departed the same way there.

A tap to long off sees him keep the strike. Admirable control from Root.

  18. Aus 113-2published at 21 overs

    Run rate 5.38

Finch picks up a single before Head does get off the mark with a cover drive for two.

No boundaries in a fair while for the hosts as Liam Plunkett sends down another tight over.

  19. Aus 110-2published at 20 overs

Shrewd decision from Eoin Morgan to put on Root, with England's off-spinners both looking dangerous on this Gabba pitch.

Travis Head is the new man in but can't get off the mark yet.

Excellent from Root. He has this ability to pick up wickets. They should use him more often. A little bit of turn and Smith got himself into a bit of a tangle.
