Smith lbw Root 18 (Aus 110-2)

Joe Root's off-spin does for Australia captain Steve Smith.

It's a decent ball, turning into the right-hander his slightly round-arm action and Smith plays all around it.

It looked out and was given, with DRS duly showing it was umpire's call on hitting the top of leg stump.

    Off trudges Smith.

Got him! Surely! Steve Smith plays around his front pad, misses a straight one and it whacks the pads.

Huge appeal from England and given out. Smith calls for a review though...

    Smith picks up another single.

It looks like Joe Root is going to enter the attack...

50 for Finchpublished at 18.4 overs

Following on from his century at Melbourne, Aaron Finch brings up his fifty with a swivel round the corner.

It's taken him 51 balls, again displaying a good range of shots and adaptability to play a different way from his destructive best.

  7. Not outpublished at 04:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

Sure enough that clipped the pad on the way through, but crucially missed Smith's bat.

Good ball from Plunkett but England lose their review.

  8. England reviewpublished at 18.2 overs

Liam Plunkett is on in place of Adil Rashid and fires one through Steve Smith. Jos Buttler catches and goes up in appeal. Given not out but Eoin Morgan is going to have a look.

Didn't sound like it caught the edge...

Everyone talks about the Barmy Army but there are lots of different other groups out here. We spoke with one who really knew their cricket for two hours and we had to be on our A game. I's a good job we knew roughly what we were talking about.

  10. Aus 102-1published at 18 overs

Moeen continues after drinks on a nagging length, with Finch and Smith just having to knock it away for ones and twos as Australia bring up the 100.

  12. drinks break

    Aus 96-1published at 17 overs

Rashid finds his length in his third over - plenty of control to restrict Australia to just two from it.

    And that'll be drinks.

Moeen Ali has a few subtle variations in pace and he is showing good control of line. Australia have gone with a lot of bits and pieces bowlers but will they offer the control that the frontline bowler Moeen does?

  14. Aus 94-1published at 16 overs

Moeen turns one down leg, Finch flicks at it and Buttler takes the catch behind.

The England keeper appeals but nothing doing - that missed the bat and flicked the pad.

Elsewhere, another very tidy over from Moeen, conceding just three. Will Australia regret not picking a frontline spinner? More on offer for the off-spinner than the seamers here so far.

  16. Aus 91-1published at 15 overs

Just a couple of singles to finish the over - decent response from Rashid after getting hit for six off the first ball.

  17. Aus 89-1published at 14.4 overs

Finch fails to pick Rashid's googly and it strikes him on the pads. England go up but given not out. Will Eoin Morgan review? No, that looked to be sliding down leg.

Replays show it would've been umpire's call.

  19. 6 runs

    Aus 88-1published at 14.1 overs

Australia are clearly targeting Rashid again, Smith skipping down the pitch to launch down the ground for six.

Nowhere near as big as Finch's maximum but still plenty on it to clear the rope. Can Rashid hold his nerve?

England fast bowler on BBC Test Match Special

It's hard to say what the par score here is - certainly over 300. There has been no seam movement whatsoever and not a lot of pace either. We saw Mark Wood roughing them up at Melbourne but every time they have tried it today they have gone to the boundary. Australia will want 320, maybe even more.
