That was very similar to Bairstow's dismissal in the last game, the weight slightly on the back foot looking to go over the top. No real need for it but that's the way he has been playing.

    Roy c Finch b Cummins 19 (Eng 38-1)

Well it was a ropey over but Cummins has the early breakthrough for Australia as Roy goes.

The England opener tried to loft a full delivery over the in-field but could not get the elevation on it as Aaron Finch takes a solid catch above his head in the covers.

Cummins fires it down wide and Roy hammers it away past point to the fence.

After a top first over, Cummins has lost his radar a touch, sending down three leg-side wides.

I think Australia wanted to bat under lights where it might skid on a bit, but I think they just fancied a change after two defeats, plus they are well aware that England like chasing.

Bairstow defends it straight down and Roy shows excellent awareness to call him through for a quick single. Steve Smith tries to kick the ball onto the stumps but shanks it - could do with some tips from Chris Woakes, who ran out Alex Carey with his foot in the second ODI.

Roy flicks to leg for one before Bairstow can't connect with a flashing cut shot off the last.

Cummins is bowling at good pace - no warm-up deliveries. It's not often you see Jason Roy facing six dots. I'm intrigued by what that man on his shoulder would be saying. It's exactly what Australia would be crying out for from Cummins - a little bit of control.

  7. Eng 29-0published at 5 overs

Promising start from Cummins - an uppish drive from Roy lands short of David Warner at wide mid-off before he gets Roy playing and missing just outside off.

Five dot balls - can Roy work anything off the last? No, he picks out extra cover and that's a maiden.

An early change in the bowling - Mitch Starc is withdrawn for Pat Cummins...

It's a feature of Roy's batting how well he times it. We know he can muscle it over the ropes at will but he has got so many options up his sleeve he doesn't need to go after it too much.

  11. Eng 29-0published at 4 overs

    Roy 14, Bairstow 11

Australia bring fine leg in short and Roy punishes them - walking across his stumps to glance one that was angling in round the corner for four. Excellent innovation and execution.

Roy glances to third man for one before Bairstow slices past point for a couple.

Bang! Hazlewood over-pitches and Bairstow clatters it through extra cover for four.

Geoff Ellis: Don’t you think that the Aussies have loaded their bowling at the expense of their batting depth? They need early wickets!

  13. Eng 17-0published at 3 overs

Roy tries to pull Starc away, misses as the ball just evades his shirt and it's called wide down leg. Starc is absolutely livid and remonstrates with the umpire. It was tight but if it didn't hit any part of Roy.

Shot! Starc strays onto the pads and Roy flicks it away square to the fence.

A vicious short ball to finish from Starc, who is still chuntering away.

Having spoken to a few of the England boys, they were surprised by the pace Hazlewood has. We know he is a metronomic bowler but he certainly has the pace now as well.

  16. Eng 11-0published at 2 overs

Jason Roy hits the first boundary of the day, rocking back to punch through the covers. Lovely stuff.

Just a couple of singles elsewhere off the over.

Josh Hazlewood is going to have his first bowl of the series. He was tremendous in the Tests - what can he do with the white ball?

  18. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

Starc strays wide on the off side but Bairstow gets bat on it and slices away to third man for a sharply run two.

A well-directed bouncer is fired down but Bairstow calmly sways out of the way.

Starc then gets one through onto the pads. Brief appeal but not out. That looked to be high and going down leg.

England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

It might be a touch of an Ashes hangover for a few of the Australia players but the England bowlers have done fantastically well. Potentially they will come under a bit more pressure when they have a total to defend, so we'll see how they cope with that.

  20. Eng 3-0published at 0.0 overs

Swing for Starc straight away but it swings past leg stump and then gets away from Tim Paine, allowing England to get off the mark with two wides.

Late swing again next up but it's down leg again. Paine collects but that's another wide - England have three runs without a legitimate ball being bowled.
