    Guptill c Curran b Woakes 3 (NZ 12-1)

Gone! England remove the dangerous Martin Guptill in the softest fashion. It's a nothing shot from Guptill, who plays across the line to a straight one from Chris Woakes top tamely pat to Tom Curran at mid-on. Big wicket.

Colin Munro had a massive hack at Mark Wood's first ball followed by a little chuckle. He then plays a lovely shot for four, before an airy-fairy drive which flew past Joe Root in the slips. I think it's probably the first time Munro's faced Wood and I like the cut of his jib so far.

  3. NZ 12-0published at 2 overs

Mark Wood shares the new balls, already looking like the quickest bowler on show, troubling the left-handed Munro, whose nervous prodding results in a couple of boundaries. First through the covers, then an edge that goes wide of second slip Joe Root. A New Zealand flyer would take a huge chunk out of this chase.

Following this match closely in Hanoi while having breakfast in my hotel. Punched the air at Buttler’s slog, which was closely followed by a head in hands moment. The Vietnamese all seem rather confused. Perhaps I can start to the spread this beautiful game to this part of the world?

    Target 235

This New Zealand opening pair won't be worrying about the pitch. If it's up, it's going. When Woakes is too full, Guptill gives it the long levers to pick up three over mid-wicket. No great movement from the Brummie Botham yet.

Always difficult to judge exactly what is a par score until we see the team batting second face a few overs. England's seemingly low score may not prove to be that bad!

Right then, players are back in the middle, Stephan Shemilt back in the chair. Chris Woakes is bowling to Martin Guptill, with Colin Munro at t'other end. Two slips, 235 to win.

Rob Hart: Willey not getting a fair crack. Gun fielder, explosive batsman and top left-arm bowler. Left out for Curran? Nonsense.

Chippi: Why has David Willey been dropped? Left-arm option, economical, fantastic fielder and decent with the bat! Fantastic in the last game and it's swinging this game!

I was a little bit disappointed for David Willey to miss out. He hasn't really fulfilled his role or potential because he hasn't been given a chance. He has been under utilised and bowled five or six over in both games, usually just in the power play. Chris Woakes and David Willey up front have been good up front, taking wickets and being economical. He has been excellent in the first 10 overs and has not been used beyond that.

Just in case you are just joining us, New Zealand won the toss and put England into bat on a pitch described by Black Caps captain Kane Williamson as "interesting" and by England skipper Eoin Morgan as "not the prettiest". England's batsmen found it tough going early on with all of the top order getting starts without turning it into anything more meaningful.

Joe Root had looked the most suited to the surface before he danced down the track and was caught by Ish Sodhi off the miserly Colin de Grandhomme, who finished with 1-24 off his 10 overs. Eoin Morgan (48) and Ben Stokes (39) rebuilt the innings before cameos from Jos Buttler (29), Moeen Ali (23) and Chris Woakes (16).

New Zealand leg-spinner Sodhi finished the pick of the attack with 3-53, Trent Boult collected 2-47 while Tim Southee (1-48) and De Grandhomme claimed one apiece as three England batsmen were run out.

England will want wickets early doors and will want to squeeze. They have a bit of scoreboard pressure. It depends on if one of the New Zealand hitters at the top of the order can get going. If Brendon McCullum was playing he would tee off, almost slogging.

Difficult to determine whether that is a good score for England given the nature of the pitch. New Zealand will fancy their chances, but a couple of early wickets and Eoin Morgan's men will be in business with runs on the board.

We don't know if that is a good score, because we don't know how the Kiwis will approach it. We don't know how bad this wicket is.

Wood run out (Nicholls/Boult) 1 (Eng 234 all out)

England are all out off the final ball of the innings. Tom Curran chips one towards mid-off and England try to come back for a second run. However, Mark Wood is well short of his ground and Henry Nicholls' throw is straight into the hands of Trent Boult who whips off the bails.

It thumped into Rashid, a top edge into the helmet. Curran was right o call for the single, but Rashid was dazed and confused. Boult did well. Sometimes you don't want that much time when you're throwing at the stumps.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 49.2 overs

Rashid run out (Boult) 11 (Eng 231-9)

It's all happening! Adil Rashid opens the face of the bat to strike the ball for four but a ball later is run out. A short pitched delivery hits him on the helmet and England try to scamper a single, but Boult picks up the ball turns and his throw is good.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 48.4 overs

Moeen run out (De Grandhomme) 23

Moeen Ali backs up a little too far, Adil Rashid initially looks to take the run but changes his mind after he smears one straight to Colin de Grandhomme and he quickly gets the ball back into the hands of Tim Southee to take off the bails. Rashid makes amends a ball later by whipping the ball for four.
