    Cheers Amy, sterling work.

I've just had a banana to try and ensure I make it through to the close, can Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow do the same?

Make it through to the close, that is, not necessarily the banana bit.

There are 32 overs left in the day. Or morning. Or maybe evening. I've lost all concept of what time it is.

I'm off for food and maybe a nap. Jack Skelton will take you through to the end of proceedings.

The two places that don't need any fiddling with in England's batting line-up are Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.

Chris Kent: We can’t find Cook an opening partner for years, why call for him to be cut? Who else is going to form an opening partnership?

There is no real pace onto the bat and New Zealand have done well to restrict these usually free-scoring players. But Stokes and Bairstow have done well after England were in the mire at 94-5.

These two need to still be at the crease by the end of the day.

They've got a longer tail than usual to protect.

New Zealand's session, no doubt about it. But England have pulled it back ever so slightly with that partnership between Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.

    Bairstow 30, Stokes 25

There's a yelp against Ben Stokes as he gets struck on the pad, but Stokes has taken a big stride forward and I reckon that's going past his off stump.

And that, folks, is that. England are still very much up against it, although while these two are in, they've got a chance.

It's worked, as well. We're going to have another spell of Colin de Grandhomme before tea.

  10. Eng 150-5published at 57 overs

Nice bit of work from Jonny Bairstow, cutting a bit of short, wide nothingness from Trent Boult away for four.

Boult's doing his best to squeeze in another over before tea. He's running back to his mark after every delivery.

The fifty partnership took 109 balls and included six fours.

    De Grandhomme 13-3-33-0

Ben Stokes pushes forward to meet Colin de Grandhomme's first delivery, but an inside edge finds his pads, before trickling away towards a vacant short leg.

Ooft, and that's four! It's short and wide and Stokes steps back and sends a fine drive fizzing away to the boundary. That brings up the fifty partnership, too.

Where is the next KP or Anderson coming from? There just doesn't seem to be anyone in this current squad who can match those big game players.

How will the team look by the time they tour Sri Lanka later in the year?

    Bairstow 24, Stokes 21

These two do run very well together, as a whip off the pad by Jonny Bairstow brings about a couple.

Four! Bairstow plonks his foot forward and drives handsomely, past an outstretched Boult and back down the ground. Lovely stuff.

Neil Wagner is going to take a breather. Trent Boult's back.

Matt Arnot: Well, we might be 123-5 with Stuart Broad in next, but the good news is that, of our two remaining competent batsmen, only Bairstow looks like a walking wicket.

Jon Gregory: I think ultimately there is a distinct lack of quality in this England batting side. There's an air of familiarity and inevitability to their dismissals.

  17. Eng 134-5published at 54 overs

Colin de Grandhomme goes round the wicket at the watchful Ben Stokes, who defends a couple, leaves three and picks up four runs off the last.

It's a streaky boundary though, Stokes shaping to hit through the covers but it runs off the inside edge through fine leg.

    Bairstow 18, Stokes 17

Shot! That's a proper cover drive from Jonny Bairstow. It's chased down by a scampering Henry Nicholls for three.

Neil Wagner bends his back for another short ball and it's met with a controlled pull shot by Ben Stokes.

All four Tests played here have been won by wickets here (one was by the side batting first after a follow-on) - and in all five, the team winning the toss has chosen to field.
