  1. Eng 126-5published at 52 overs

It's still a little streaky from Jonny Bairstow so far, the ball mostly finding the edge of the bat, but he's hanging on in there.

A little push adds another single to the total.

Lose 4-0 in Australia - yet keep faith with majority of the underperforming players that played down under. So players being told that they need to perform at county level who score consistently yet are then overlooked for the same old, what sort of message does that send to them?

    Wagner 10-4-21-0

Another attempt at a drive from Jonny Bairstow, but the inside edge goes past the stumps and allows him to steal a sneaky single.

Ben Stokes is constantly on the move, walking forward and brandishing his bat towards Neil Wagner. He pulls a short ball, but only for a single.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow are the two England batsmen most willing to move their feet and play on the front foot.

Colin de Grandhomme hustles and bustles his way through his third maiden of the day.

Rob Davidson: I have been thinking about where it all went wrong for England and realised it all went wrong when James Taylor was tragically forced to retire. Huge talent just about to really cut loose at Test level. Middle order weaker without him.

  7. Eng 122-5published at 49 overs

    Stokes 14, Bairstow 13

Jonny Bairstow gets down on one knee for a big, booming drive at Neil Wagner and ends up wafting his bat into thin air as the ball goes merrily skipping though to the keeper.

Wagner whistles down a bouncer to remind him which one of them is in charge.

England seem keen to keep the Test and ODI sides very different - to perhaps not let the Test failures infect the ODI side? I do wonder if after the 2019 World Cup we may see an influx of one-day players into the Test team.

  9. Eng 122-5published at 48 overs

Colin de Grandhomme comes around the wicket to Ben Stokes, and beats him with consecutive deliveries outside the off stump.

Stokes stomps away from his crease to have a furious word with himself, before Bairstow comes jogging up for a chat.

Barnaby: I feel like this was prime time for England to try some fresh faces in this Test with no real pride left to lose.

Christopher Chappell: I see the selection logic now. Keep the top order fragility, dismantle the lower middle order bail-out machine (ie drop Woakes and Ali). Awesome.

Hard hands from Jonny Bairstow as he pushes forward to Neil Wagner, but the ball takes enough of the outside edge to whip past the slips and away for four.

It all feels very sedate at the moment. Which I'm aware is tempting fate.

There seems to be a huge disparity between Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow and the rest of the England batsmen at the moment. Even Alastair Cook is struggling.

    Bairstow 9, Stokes 12

No-one shouts "no run!" as loudly as Jonny Bairstow. You can hear him a mile off.

A nurdle off his hips brings a couple of runs, before the slips end up with their hands on their heads as an inside edge just scuttles past his stumps.

Double change for the Black Caps. Colin de Grandhomme is back into the attack.

What they need now is a giant overhead cover to suspend over the pitch so they can keep playing when it's raining.

Graeme Swann adds: If you invented it, you could call it the Rain Mann.

  16. Eng 113-5published at 45 overs

Some width from Neil Wagner allows Jonny Bairstow to free his arms and crunch a drive throguh the covers. A good diving stop by Martin Guptill keeps it to three, though.

Ooh I dunno, Hugh. Yeah, the cricket's bad, but you get to watch it at some cracking grounds.

Neil Wagner is back into the attack for New Zealand.

Hugh Grant: Disappointing for the Barmy Army who travelled here just to see this sorry display. Appoint Geoffrey Boycott to teach concentration, application and a straight bat. Test cricket is too much for most of this team.

    Southee 14-2-37-3

Four! A roll of the wrists from Ben Stokes dispatches a Tim Southee short ball to the ropes.

Southee bowls a little straighter, and Stokes covers up in defence, before plonking a single away to end the over.

My current favourite stat: no-one in this New Zealand team was born, external when the Black Caps last won a home Test series against England.

Anyhoo, drinks are done, and Tim Southee will continue.
