Leach has bowled nicely. I don't know if he has an arm ball, but because he hasn't got that one that skids on, he needs to use the crease more as his release point is the same for every ball. Just change it by six or seven inches as otherwise the batsman can line you up. His control's been good, he does err on the side of bowling slightly full, but when he gets a bit more confidence at this level he'll be in business. He's impressed me.

    Cheers, Amy. Sterling work.

We were on shift for the first Ashes Test all the way back in late November and haven't commentated on an England Test win since.

One (potentially curtailed) session left. Four wickets. Can England do it?

Losing BJ Watling and them Tom Latham was a blow for New Zealand, but Colin de Grandhomme and Ish Sodhi have done well to keep them out.

It might be my rare optimistic side showing, but I think it's got a touch lighter in Christchurch. Although, naturally, we now have a 20-minute break.

Jack Skelton will take you through to the bitter end.

I reckon we'll have 15 or 16 overs left before the light goes.

Becca Bell: I'm working at Christchurch airport and it's nice and sunny here... wondering why they are talking about light at Hagley Oval?!

Katya Witney: We already don’t play cricket in rain, please let’s not extend this to not playing in cloud either.

England can win this but we're keeping our eye on that cloud.

    Ha!

England go haring around, trying to squeeze in another over before eta. The umpires, not in quite so much of a hurry, take their time wandering over, and then take the stumps off.

    That's tea.

A two for Ish Sodhi, although Colin de Grandhomme is very late to turn for the second and he rather ambles back down to the other end.

Leading edge brings Sodhi a single, before De Grandhomme drives down the ground for four. Wood also ends up on the floor as he falls over in his follow through.

    Now then!

Mark Wood is going to share the new ball with James Anderson.

Tidy from James Anderson, with just two runs from the over.

    There's 40 overs remaining today.

There's some dark clouds gathering to one side of the ground, but the wind seems to be hurrying them along fairly quickly.

Ish Sodhi keeps things ticking along by flicking a single off his legs.

England need to show some urgency with these overs. You need to get what you can in because that cloud is on its way.

Four slips in place for James Anderson as he comes in to Colin de Grandhomme...

And De Grandhomme works a single from the second ball.

  15. new ball

England have, unsurprisingly, taken the new ball.

James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Joe Root are having a conflab as Anderson gets ready to bowl.

    The new ball is due!

The fourth umpire has come running on to the pitch to deliver some jackets to the umpires.

That's a wasted bouncer by Mark Wood. Ish Sodhi is not a bad batsman and it doesn't look like he's going to get out to the short stuff.

  18. NZ 182-6published at 80 overs

Ish Sodhi can't resist a little tickle at a leg side delivery and he's close to getting a nick on it.

He then decides, rather sensibly, to just stay out of the way of the short stuff. Maiden.

Jack Leach could use the crease more to create a different angle - at the moment he bowls from the same spot each time - but that's something that will come with playing more Test cricket.

  20. NZ 182-6published at 79 overs

A tidy, and more importantly for England, speedy, maiden from Jack Leach.
