Fifteen minutes until tea, two overs until the new ball, and James Anderson has just nipped off the field.

Jack Leach is going to replace James Anderson. Mark Wood, fielding down in the deep, looks highly confused as no-one tells him where to go and stand.

That would be the best thing possible for England, Bryan! It would force them to pitch it up.

The light worsening might mean England aren't allowed to bowl bouncers.

    43 overs left

A fine drive from Colin de Grandhomme brings him a leisurely three.

Mark Wood ends the over with a half-hearted appeal for a strangle down the leg side. There's no noise.

That's a nasty height for a lower order batsman to deal with. Sodhi almost fended that straight to Stoneman at short leg.

  6. NZ 179-6published at 77.4 overs

Short from Mark Wood and Colin de Grandhomme pulls again, but it's controlled and he plays the ball down, where it bounces just in front of Ben Stokes.

Oh! Hard hands from Ish Sodhi, pushing forward, but he just about manages to get the ball past Mark Stoneman.

Joe Root is bowling beautifully here, finding a bit of drift and dip.

  8. NZ 177-6published at 77 overs

Down the wicket comes Colin de Grandhomme, but he doesn't time his attempted clip and it's only a single.

Joe Root then gets consecutive deliveries to drift in to Ish Sodhi, who meets the ball with a straight bat.

Umpire Bruce Oxenford has called for what Ian Smith describes as his "light enhancing glasses" which is a sign that it's getting dark.

Only four overs until the new ball, though...

After having watched and listened to a silly amount of cricket in the middle of the night over the last few months without any reward I feel the England team finally owe me a victory before I can no longer stay awake!

    Wood 12-5-29-1

A flick off the hip from Ish Sodhi brings him a single, although it's a little high and a little airy. Sodhi then does very well to keep out a fine yorker from Wood at the end of the over.

There's some clouds gathering over the Hagley Oval, but I daresay it's not nearly as gloomy as it was this time yesterday.

A glance up to the dressing room shows that Neil Wagner is padded up next. Tim Southee was struggling with a virus yesterday.

Five overs to go until the new ball. Jack Leach is off, Mark Wood back on.

Matt Swift: So errr... why did Leach not start in the Ashes then?

Serenity Seeker: I tried to stay up til the end. I really did. Got to get up 20 minutes ago. G’night.

    Root 8-3-18-0

Two lbw appeals in the over from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow against Colin de Grandhomme, but one's too high and the other is sliding down leg.

    That'll be a maiden.

That was a very, very good ball. One that gets into the mind of a batsman.

  16. NZ 174-6published at 74 overs

    Sodhi 10, De Grandhomme 16

A little paddle sweep from Ish Sodhi brings him another couple, before he's done by another one that turns and slides off the face of the bat.

  17. NZ 172-6published at 73.1 overs

Beauty! That is glorious from Jack Leach. Turn, bounce, pace, and the ball nips past Ish Sodhi's bat and somehow turns past off stump.

James Anderson then cracks me up by remarking "that is a NUT!" from second slip.

Samuel Cardwell: Really good bowling from Leach - I hope England see the value in a dedicated spinner after this match!

Tom Julius: Thanks to TMS I’m able to nervously listen to the cricket all the way from Montgomery, Alabama! Come on boys!
