A fuller length has paid dividends for Stuart Broad this morning, and Pakistan were wobbling at 17-2 after 9.1 overs.
Ex-England batsman James Taylor on key areas for England to improve: "If you’re starting the game and you’re already behind the eight ball because you’ve lost early wickets, that’s not ideal.
"When England were at their best they set a really strong platform, then the others could play from there. The opener is a worry and it has been since Strauss retired.
"I’m sure they’ll come good. Keaton Jennings has just been given a go and I really like him as a player. Mentally he’s a tough character and he scores runs and he’s in good form at the minute. Hopefully this will help England.
"They’ve been poor for a while now, purely because they haven’t been doing their skills well enough for long enough. I think it’s as simple as that."
You can't keep a good Stuart Broad down, though, and he dismissed Imam ul-Haq just a few deliveries later.
Decent ball, bad shot.
BBC Test Match Special
Test Match Special have got a fine cast of names for you to listen to during today's lunchtime break: Dave Richardson, ICC chief executive, plus Eoin Morgan, Clive Lloyd, Brian Lara and Allan Donald. Not a bad batting line-up - and some pace with the ball!
We've also been speaking to former England batsman James Taylor, whose autobiography is out today.
Ta Jack.
Not exactly a quiet start to he innings for Pakistan - Imam ul-Haq was given out lbw to the eighth ball of the day but successfully overturned it...
Here's Amy Lofthouse to recap the morning and take you through lunch. Cheers.
Waqar Younis
Former Pakistan pace bowler
I don't think it was a bad session - I still think it was a good decision to bat first by Pakistan. You can't do anything about the fact it's gone muggy and the clouds have come in but it's been some quality bowling.
Salahuddin 3, Sarfraz 6
Sarfraz gets on the front foot and smacks it on the up through the covers. Curran gives chase but can't quite pull it in before the ball hits the boundary.
The Pakistan skipper picks up one, leaving debutant Salahuddin two balls to face before lunch.
Broad slides the first way down leg. And the second is wide of off as Salahuddin shoulders arms.
And that's the interval. England on top, an impressive rejoinder to their dismal showing at Lord's.

England are sensing a huge opportunity here. One more wicket would make it an extraordinary first session after what has happened in the last week.

Ballanced opinions: Is Chris Woakes the James Milner of cricket?
Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed is the new man in and clips it off the body to pick up a single and get off the mark.
Warm applause for Chris Woakes from the Headingley crowd. He was lacking consistency early on but is really into his rhythm now.
Woakes and Broad have been England's best bowlers today and the hosts have them both on before lunch. Can they make it five down?

That was another wonderful delivery from Woakes. Pakistan are rocking now.

I don't think you can do anything about that delivery. It was the perfect length. It looked like the ball was coming into the batsman and then it pitched and left the batsman.
Shafiq c Cook b Woakes 27 (Pak 62-4)
Got him! England do have a fourth wicket before lunch.
It's a pearler from Chris Woakes, an ideal line and length and enough movement away to catch the outside edge of Asad Shafiq's bat.
Alastair Cook juggles it briefly at first slip but easily holds on.
Shafiq had looked good but just had to play at that ball, undone by some excellent bowling.
So England maybe could have had a fourth wicket there, had they reviewed.
The hosts did get a third just now though - Chris Woakes inducing the edge as Haris Sohail picks out Dawid Malan at second slip...
Stuart Broad is back on for a blast before lunch.
But he's meet with a towering pull shot from Asad Shafiq, who clatters a short ball away to the fence.
Good response from Broad, beating the outside edge off the last.
Oooh. They've just shown a replay of that play and miss that shows a bit of a spike as the ball goes past the glove.
Second and third slip did appeal but there was nothing from Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow.
The close up then appears to show that Salahuddin did indeed get a bit of glove on that one. England should have reviewed!
Salahuddin defends his first ball in Test cricket to mid-off and jogs a leg bye off his second.
Woakes goes very full at Shafiq, who flicks it round the corner for a single.
There it is! Woakes jumps wide of the crease, pushes it in and gets it to move away from back of a length, with Salahuddin playing and missing.
Can England get another before lunch? About 15 minutes left in this session.

If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it. A chap on the Western Terrace has just pulled out Brussels Pate and a packet of olives. It's like being back at Lord's.
Usman Salahuddin is in at number five on his Test debut.
He won't be facing fellow debutant Sam Curran just yet though as Asad Shafiq is on strike.
Shafiq slices the last ball through gully for four and that's 50 up for Pakistan.
