Joe Root has committed to having Anderson and Broad on for an hour and then Woakes and Curran for an hour. But I like the idea of having one of Anderson and Broad on all the time - almost as a security blanket.

First bowling change after drinks - Chris Woakes is on for James Anderson.

  3. The wickets to fallpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

Here are the two Pakistan wickets to fall - both to Stuart Broad.

Imam ul-Haq successfully overturned after being given out lbw but still fell for a duck, nicking off to Joe Root on the final ball of Broad's first over.

And then Broad had Azhar Ali trapped lbw in front for just two...

It's been a good toss to lose this morning. Broad's length has been much better this morning but, if I'm being honest, Jimmy Anderson has been disappointing. It's swung much more than it did at Lord's.

Drinks break - Pak 24-2published at 14 overs

Jaffa! Stuart Broad gets one to nip away off the seam and just past the outside edge of Asad Shafiq's bat.

You'd have to be brilliant to nick that.

Oof, Shafiq gets off strike and then Broad also gets Haris playing and missing at one.

And with just over an hour of play done, that'll be drinks.

There is something very likeable about this Pakistan team. They won a lot of friends when they last toured here. They play good cricket and have fun, surely they best way to play Test cricket.

  8. Pak 23-2published at 13 overs

Haris Sohail chases one down leg from James Anderson and there's a brief yelp from Jonny Bairstow behind. No bat on that though.

Anderson returns to swinging it away but his line it too wide and Haris can leave well alone. A maiden nonetheless.

Broad is staying on from the other end. Will this be the final over from England's opening bowlers?

There's plenty there - there's nip, swing and the clouds are rolling in now.

  10. Pak 23-2published at 12 overs

Haris clips it gently in front of square to pick up a single.

Nothing easy given up by Broad though, who finishes up with one angling back into the pads but Shafiq defends.

It looks like Sam Curran is warming up. James Anderson will continue next.

  11. Broad doubles uppublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

And here is the second of those first two wickets for Stuart Broad today.

He's got the ball to move both ways to right and left-handers so far - this one an inswinger that does for Azhar Ali, who missed it and was caught pretty much plumb lbw in front.

Jon Hollis: Stuart Broad started the day as the 14th highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 411. If he gets 11 wickets in the match he'll be up to ninth. He already has the first two.

Shot! Easily the shot of the day so far as Asad Shafiq gets on the front foot and guides a gorgeous cover drive to the fence off James Anderson.

England are on it today - but they shouldn't need loads of criticism to be on it. England look a different team this week. Why?

    Broad 5-3-12-2

New man Asad Shafiq slices through cover to pick up a single and get off the mark.

A very impressive opening 10 overs from the hosts.

    Andrew Samson

That is Stuart Broad's 50th Test wicket against Pakistan, at an average of 24.82. The only other England bowler to take 50 against Pakistan is Jimmy Anderson who has 58.

  17. A busy over for Imampublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

So Stuart Broad has just snaffled an lbw but he missed out on one in his first over that looked to be a great shout too.

Imam ul-Haq was given out and seemed to be reviewing in slight desperation but the Pakistan opener was right - ball tracking showed it was going over the stumps.

But Imam failed to make anything of his reprieve, falling just four balls later as he drove at a full ball pushed across and nicked it through to Joe Root at third slip...

Terrific bowling. Azhar Ali planted that front pad and England's tactic was to bowl outside off stump and then throw in a straight one. You've got to be in fine form not to miss a straight one when you're scissoring your feet like Azhar was.

Azhar lbw Broad 2 (Pak 17-2)

Stuart Broad gets one to move back in and clatters the pads of Azhar Ali right in front.

    Big appeal and given!

Azhar consults with Haris Sohail but opts against the review.

Good decision, that one was plumb. England on top and Broad in fine form.

  20. Pak 17-1published at 9 overs

Well now. Azhar Ali charges down the pitch at James Anderson, trying to negate the swing.

The Lancashire man gives him a bit of stare after.

Azhar stays at home next up and the ball clips away off his pads for a leg bye.
