It's the kind of pitch where you are never in. I thought it would play well, and it was a right decision to bat first, but this new ball has proven difficult. England will feel they have done a good job this morning now. They have bowled well, apart from Anderson - I was disappointed with his spell. He didn't make the batsmen play enough.

    Haris c Malan b Woakes 28 (Pak 49-3)

    The breakthrough!

Just as things were looking very sedate out there, Chris Woakes removes Haris Sohail and England get the third wicket they needed before lunch.

It's on a teasing line across the left-hander, moving slightly off the seam and Haris nicks it from just outside off and into the hands of Dawid Malan at second slip.

A much better ball from Woakes, proving what he is capable of. Remarkably, that's the first first class wicket he has taken this year.

Mark Graham: Curran looks like a typical English trundler. Very gentle and easy to bat against. The county game is so weak we can't take stats into account. Go back to the Fletcher days and pick on potential.

  4. Pak 46-2published at 20 overs

Haris Sohail slices it away towards the point boundary but Joe Root pulls it in to save a run.

Asad Shafiq picks up a single.

A bit ho hum from England at the moment. Feels like the pressure built up by Stuart Broad early on has been released.

Is Chris Woakes too inconsistent to be a real threat in Test cricket? Is Sam Curran just not yet quick enough to be playing at this level?

Barney: Drop Wood (87mph average speed on a slow Lord's pitch last week) and replace him with Curran (77mph swinger) on a dry, fast pitch at Leeds? Sums up the mess of the Test selections currently.

A tidy maiden from Chris Woakes, who is finding the right line and length more often now.

  7. Pak 42-2published at 18.2 overs

Chris Woakes now gets one to tail in and hit the pads of Asad Shafiq.

England appeal but not out. Again, that was missing the stumps on height.

I've had my first look at a currently subdued Western Terrace. I've seen a chap dressed as a pint, Mexicans, Donald Trump and a group on 'Bewley's EMS leaving do'. It's like the calm before the storm.

  9. Pak 42-2published at 12:25 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

Sam Curran is mainly swinging it away from the left-hander but gets one to go the other way with a slightly scrambled seam and into the pads of Haris Sohail.

Brief appeal but not out, that was going over.

That variation will be key for the debutant, because otherwise the Pakistan batsman don't seem to worried about facing Curran down at 77-80mph.

It's fascinating stuff because the ball is still moving.

  11. Pak 39-2published at 17 overs

Yep, no sign of an edge on any of the replays or ultraedge.

Looks like Chris Woakes made the right call in telling his captain not to review.

Root was convinced he nicked that - it's not often you see the captain wanting a review and the bowler saying not to bother.

Ooh. Chris Woakes squares up Haris Sohail from over the wicket with one that slides just past off.

Jonny Bairstow goes up to appeal for the edge. Think that clipped the back leg if anything.

    Nothing given and no review.

He's bowling full, which is nice to see. You don't mind the batsman driving you.

Full and straight again but this time at 81mph as Haris pushes it through the covers for a couple.

Curran cranks another up to 81mph and Haris leaves it alone.

Shot! Full, swinging but down on pace and Haris picks it up quickly to slap it away through cover for four.

And his first ball is full, with a touch of shape away that Haris Sohail taps into off.

He goes for the yorker next up but it ends up being a low full toss that Haris defends.

His pace is down below 80mph to start.

Dan Pritchett: More poor captaincy from Root. He watched Curran dismantle Yorkshire last month with a swinging ball and refuses to bring him on early enough when Anderson ineffective.

  20. Pak 32-2published at 15 overs

Chris Woakes strays short and Asad Shafiq uppercuts it away for four.

Make that back-to-back boundaries - Woakes overcompensates by pushing it very full and Shafiq drives it to the fence.

Better length from Woakes in response, with some swing away, but Shafiq is not interested in playing at that.

Eek, he shouldn't be playing at that either but Shafiq flashes at a short, wide one to finish.
