Pitched in line. No bat. Only issue could be height...

  2. Pakistan reviewpublished at 1.2 overs

Stuart Broad clatters his second ball into the pads of Imam ul-Haq.

    Looks good and given!

    Imam signals for the review.

    Theory debunked.

Stuart Broad will open the bowling with James Anderson as usual, Sam Curran must wait.

  4. Pak 0-0published at 1 over

Lovely stuff from James Anderson, opening with a maiden over.

A few testing deliveries in there, pitching it up and swinging it away.

Azhar Ali left well after nibbling at the first, mind.

Sam Curran is at long leg. There's a theory that his relative lack of pace means he needs to take the new ball.

  6. Pak 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Ooof. A pearler from Anderson straight away, a touch of away swing beating the edge of Azhar's bat.

Both sides are out on the pitch at Headingley.

  9. Weather forecastpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

BBC Weather's Tomasz Schafernaker: "We should just about avoid the showers today - despite them being within a 30-mile radius - so while we can't be certain, we should get a dry day. There could be some significant showers affecting play tomorrow though."

I like the selection of Sam Curran - he's the type of bowler who can get England three quick wickets if it's swinging. Joe Root has got to get him in early if it's swinging. He's an asset when the ball is new and swinging but could struggle against Test players on a good pitch. He has to bowl early.

Pakistan's Mohammad Amir, speaking to Sky Sports: "I have good memories of this ground. Leeds is a good wicket and I was man of the match here against Australia in 2010. You can often swing the ball here, so let's see."

England's ODI batting coach Graham Thorpe: "It was nice to give Sam his cap. To present it to a Surrey player, at his age, was really special. Sam is a very competitive cricketer. he's been on lots of Lions tours, has good craft and skill as a bowler and his batting is coming on nicely too. He's a talented player. England's search for a left-arm seamer is well documented and it's a great opportunity for Sam."

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It feels like a fantastic day for batting. England are going to have to bowl well and take their chances. We haven't spoken about their fielding recently because the batting has been such a big issue, but their catching in the last 15 Tests has been atrocious.

England XI: Cook, Jennings, Root, Malan, Bairstow, Buttler, Woakes, Bess, Curran, Broad, Anderson.

Pakistan XI: Azhar, Imam, Sohail, Shafiq, Salahuddin, Sarfraz, Shadab, Faheem, Amir, Hasan, Abbas.

  17. Captains' viewpublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

England Joe's Root: "It looks a good surface. It's humid today so we might get swing and we have to use what we get with a fresh pitch. We were below par in the last Test and the fact the game has come around so quickly has helped us."

Pakistan's Sarfraz Ahmed: "It looks like a good pitch, a dry pitch, so hopefully we can post a good score."

Confirmation of the teams - England make three changes from the side that lost at Lord's.

Pakistan make one enforced change as Usman Salahuddin makes his debut in place of Babar Azam, who broke his wrist in the first Test.
