  • England go 1-0 up in five-game series

  1. Aus 56-3published at 11 overs

Tim Paine gets off the mark with a boundary through the covers.

David Willey thought he'd pulled it in and restricted Australia to three but he'd dragged back the boundary rope during his dive and replays show the ball passed over where the rope would've been.

Glenn Maxwell isn't in great form, and I think spin will work against that middle order.

Oh. Captain Tim Paine is striding out, despite Glenn Maxwell being down to bat at five. Can the new skipper rescue the innings and set a platform for Maxwell's big hitting later on?

For such a talented batsman, Shaun Marsh does have such a vulnerability against spin. That's done a little bit, but nothing extreme. It's spun by a inch, and he's missed it. Australia have gifted England three wickets.

It's a strange dismissal. There didn't seem to be too much venom in the ball. It might have just straightened, and Marsh played down the wrong line.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 10.2 overs

    Marsh b Moeen 24 (Aus 52-3)

Bowled him! Another ropey shot brings about the third Australian wicket.

Moeen Ali gets one to straighten from round the wicket, it doesn't really bite, but Shaun Marsh plays down the completely wrong line and sees his off-stump knocked over.

Despite the woeful batting, it's been very tidy stuff from Moeen, cranking up the pressure on the Aussies.

  7. Aus 51-2published at 10 overs

Ooh. David Willey squares up Marcus Stoinis and a thick outside edge runs along the ground through gully for one.

Ooh part two. Shaun Marsh then plays an uppish drive and the ball bounces just short of Eoin Morgan in the covers.

Marsh then flicks off his legs into the vast Oval outfield and scampers two to bring the fifty up for Australia.

That's the first powerplay done - England will be happy to have restricted Australia to 51-2 on a good batting pitch.

  8. Aus 48-2published at 9 overs

New man Marcus Stoinis gets off the mark with a quick single from the last ball of a superb opening over by Moeen Ali.

Will England go to spin at both ends? Not quite yet, with David Willey set to continue.

This is the perfect time to take that wicket - you felt Aaron Finch was getting in, and he didn't need to play that shot.

Now that allows Eoin Morgan to bring on Adil Rashid, and really squeeze the Australians.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 8.4 overs

    Finch c Wood b Moeen 19 (Aus 47-2)

Huge wicket! Aaron Finch looked in fine touch but falls to a loose shot.

Moeen Ali tosses it up and finds a bit of drift as Finch tries to give himself room to hit over extra cover but ends up getting a thick outside edge to Mark Wood at backward point.

England turn to spin early on as Moeen Ali enters the attack...

The England attack have bowled pretty well today. Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes, as all-rounders, give you more bowling options. On this occasion, with England having Joe Root as a sixth bowler, you imagine Australia will target a bowler and make it difficult for Eoin Morgan.

  14. Aus 46-1published at 8 overs

    Finch 19, Marsh 21

David Willey bangs it in short and seems to catch Shaun Marsh out, with the Aussie number three just about pulling it round the corner for a single after Adil Rashid's misfield.

A good over for England, just four from it.

This will be a good test for England's bowlers. There's still, you fancy, some places up for grabs.

  16. Aus 42-1published at 7 overs

Mark Wood then over-corrects by straying onto Shaun Marsh's pads and is duly clipped square for another four.

David Willey does well to smother an Aaron Finch drive off the edge that nonetheless threatened to race away through mid-wicket.

We should see plenty of boundaries at The Oval today.

That was a decent delivery by Mark Wood, top of off stump, and Shaun Marsh has timed it to perfection to hit it straight back past him. It looks like anything with any width on it, if you can lie a bit of bat on it, it is going for four.

  18. Aus 36-1published at 6.1 overs

Ah, Australia release the pressure of the last two overs as Shaun Marsh hits on the up and down the ground for four. Tremendous shot.

That little hint of swing, as we've seen this morning, keeps the batsman honest.

  20. Aus 32-1published at 6 overs

David Willey backs up his fellow opening bowler with an excellent over of his own, conceding just two singles.
