An indication of the persuasion of the crowd comes from the varying noise levels. A diving stop by an India fielder generates more excitement than an England boundary.

Double spin for India - Yuzvendra Chahal is coming back on, replacing Hardik Pandya.

India have won the last four series against England and England's record against India is their worst against anyone in the last 10 years - they have won nine matches and lost 19.

Joe Root is in at three, and off the mark to his first delivery. Jonny Bairstow hustles a single too as Kuldeep Yadav wheels through a very tidy over.

Chahal was bowling it flatter and allowed the batsmen the pace they wanted, Yadav tossed it up and the timing wasn't there for Roy. It's a big wicket and emphasising once again if you have a rare spinner like Yadav, you have to play him, he has the ability to pick up wickets.

    Ah.

That's, erm, not particularly bright from Jason Roy. Three balls in to Kuldeep Yadav's first over and Roy decides to reverse sweep him to the boundary. It's bowled a touch slower by Kuldeep, though, and Roy ends up slapping it straight to Umesh Yadav at cover.

One over and out for Yuzvendra Chahal.

    Here's Kuldeep Yadav.

Of course, it could all have been quite different for India, had they reviewed this decision against Jonny Bairstow...

Instead, he's been allowed to play shots like this...

  9. Eng 71-0published at 10 overs

    Roy 36, Bairstow 33

Hardik Pandya is on - oh, and his second ball gets whacked for four by Jason Roy! What a bit of work that is from Roy, a quick flick of the wrist sending the ball behind square for his sixth four.

It's nice to be here in conditions that remind us of home. It's not as warm as it was in the T20 matches but the Indians will like this weather. The spinners can grip the ball and the fingers are not numb.

That's good work from England, just knocking the ball around here and there and not allowing Chahal to settle.

A quicker delivery comes back in to Jason Roy, who gets into a tangle as he inside edges the ball onto his pads, but he ends the over with a fine reverse sweep that runs away for four.

Time for a change of pace.

Left arm leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is coming on in place of Umesh Yadav.

This is the 18th time Roy and Bairstow have opened together in an ODI for England and the 10th time they have reached fifty. They are currently averaging 68 per partnership.

The shots Jonny Bairstow has played through the off side have been shots of an in-form batsman and also an incredible pitch.

The sun's popped out above Trent Bridge, and Jonny Bairstow celebrates by whacking England's first six!

That made such a good sound off the bat, another short ball from Siddarth Kaul sitting up and allowing Bairstow to swing his arms and send the ball flying over the leg side and into the stand.

In a parallel universe, Trent Bridge is a very different place today. It would be packed with England football shirts and Three Lions would already have been sung more than 20 times. I've not seen one football shirt. The Three Lions are on the chests of the England batsmen. Life carries on as normal.

  18. Eng 47-0published at 7 overs

Umesh Yadav is a field tinkerer.

He drags one poor fielder back and forth in the covers, before sending him back to where he started out. Still, he only concedes another two runs from the rest of the over.

Jason Roy flings his hands at Umesh Yadav's latest delivery, and a big ol' outside edge goes flying past all the fielders and through point.

Four more! That's a gorgeous bit of placement from Roy, leaning back and deliberately dabbing the ball down to a vacant third man.
