I know I said there is more movement here than in the entire Australia game but it's not a lot. There is a slightly green outfield and the wicket is still a batting paradise. As many as you can pile on the board will be needed.

  2. Eng 37-0published at 6 overs

    Roy 14, Bairstow 21

Shot! That's four for Jonny Bairstow, walking forward and crashing a short ball from Siddarth Kaul through the off side.

A slightly clubbed drive brings Bairstow a single, before Jason Roy stands tall and wallops a wider delivery through mid-off for four.

    Umesh 3-0-19-0

Is that a chance? Jason Roy clobbers a drive back at Umesh Yadav, who sticks out a despairing hand and gets clattered on the thumb for his troubles. That would have been a sensational catch.

Umesh spends a bit of time readjusting his field and his thumb, before spearing a ball onto Bairstow's legs that gets tickled away for four.

    Here's how England's innings began...

  6. Eng 21-0published at 4 overs

Siddarth Kaul wheels his way through a very tidy over, with Jason Roy only able to punch a single off the back foot. It all feels very nice and sedate at the minute.

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

That was an absolutely extraordinary stroke from Bairstow, the sort of shot you dream about. There was nothing wrong with the ball, poor old Yadav had every right to look bemused.

  8. Eng 20-0published at 3 overs

    Bairstow 12, Roy 6

An audible "ooft" from Jason Roy as he gets squared up by Umesh Yadav, and a leading edge trickles down towards third man for a single.

That's too full, though, and Jonny Bairstow unleashes a lovely straight drive that goes racing away for four. And again! This time it's a gorgeous little punch that goes flying through the covers.

Dave: Still gutted that the football didn’t come home…but we all know it’s cricket that’s coming home next year so let’s get the hashtag trending…#CricketsComingHome

Nice work, Dave. How about readers send one - and only one - reason why cricket is or isn't coming home next summer...

  10. Eng 11-0published at 2 overs

Siddarth Kaul, pink headband firmly in place, is on for a bowl.

He gets clunked for a single by Jason Roy, pushing the ball into the covers, before a short delivery gets mullered for four by Jonny Bairstow, the ball barely getting above hip height.

  11. '325 a minimum'published at 12:38 British Summer Time 12 July 2018

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I still feel Joe Root is important to this one-day team, you need quality when you are up against quality. This wicket looks flat, the outfield looks quick, there is a dryness so it might just offer something, not a great deal, I think 325 is a minimum you are going to require batting first.

Jonny Bairstow's got away with one there.

Had India reviewed that lbw shout, he'd have been a goner, the ball clattering into leg stump. I wonder if they thought he'd nicked it...

We saw more movement in that one over than we did in the entire Australia game.

  14. Eng 6-0published at 1 over

Jason Roy jogs a bye before Jonny Bairstow gets beaten by a peach from Umesh Yadav. There's movement there for Yadav, the ball nipping away from Bairstow's bat, but it doesn't carry through to MS Dhoni.

Dearie me, that's close! Umesh gets one to swing past Bairstow's little push forward. He's struck on the back leg but India decide against the review.

That would have been a cradle catch for second slip.

  16. Eng 4-0published at 0.1 overs

    Ooft!

Swing for Umesh Yadav and Jason Roy chases the ball with hard hands. A thick inside edge whizzes just past the sole slip and away for four!

    James Taylor
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

I don't expect it to be another world record score but I expect a decent surface. It may take a little bit of spin because it is drier than we are used to at Trent Bridge.

England played the spinners well at Cardiff - they didn't commit too early, played it very simply and if they did play the big shots they played them to their areas. Getting to the pitch of the ball is crucial, especially against wrist spinners when it is going to spin a long way.

    Time for some cricket!

Here come Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy. By the looks of things, it'll be Umesh Yadav to open the bowling for India.
