Joe will be very disappointed. He tried to kid the umpire. England will be saying it is a joke in the dressing room but if it was the other way around they would have been saying it was definitely out.

That is the right decision. Don't let the booing kid you. Even though the crowd don't like it it is the right decision.

There are boos from the crowd but Root has to go. Shrieks of delight from counterpart Kohli as the decision is revealed on the screen.

What has happened here? Pandya thinks he has Root caught by at slip but the captain is unmoved and it is going to be reviewed.

A nice cup of tea would probably suit the players more than the ice cold isotonic sports drinks on this overcast afternoon. That heatwave needed to end though didn't it? Pandya will take up the attack.

Mark Elkins: In Test cricket, the number one team in the world haven’t turned up just to make up the numbers. It’s a tough, testing match. Pure Test cricket. Calls to drop both openers and the batting coach are a nonsense!

Ashwin back on the field with his brightly coloured sunglasses perched on his cap, no need for them today in the overcast conditions, although there is clearer sky in the distance beyond the River Trent. The diminutive, bushy-bearded Shami returns and Bairstow might have another bruise to contend with as an in-ducker thwacks him in the midriff. He can take his mind off it with a drink.

Jay Barnes: Hameed did alright the last time he was in the Test team. Why not give him another shot? He can't do much worse than all the other experiments England have had at the top.

    Hameed's scores for Lancashire this season in the County Championship are 1, 31, 13, 0, 20, 5, 4, 0, 4, 3, 19.

Bumrah pins Bairstow nastily with some more sharp movement in towards the right-hander's nether regions. It must have been on the thigh because he is able to calmly stand his ground afterwards. Root continues his steady progress with a neat leg glance for two more.

Hartley Witney: The batting problems England have at the top of the order must be down to the coaching and the style of play they are being encouraged to adopt. Time for Thorpe to replace Ramps.

Bumrah continues to test the batsmen and Root is grafting away, in the traditional, non-Love Island sense. I see it's Celeb Big Brother now. Which cricketers would be good value? Warney? has he been on it? I bet Chris Lewis has some good stories.

A warm welcome for Jonny Bairstow, England's highest run-scorer in the series and he is tested by more Ishant inswingers. R Ashwin going through his paces in the indoors nets, which the TV cameras have picked up on. Word is he has a hip problem.

What a fine catch. The ball was still going away from Rishabh Pant. It was not a wicket-taking ball but that is what happens in cricket. He is very dejected as all players who are caught down the leg-side are.

The old leg-side strangle and young Pope feathers a catch which is superbly taken by his fellow 20-year-old Pant, a third catch for the wicketkeeper. A dejected silence again in the crowd.
