Jos Buttler is the obvious candidate to take over the gloves. Ollie Pope has done it for Surrey too.

There's a pause in the game while England find some more keeper gloves and pads.

Bairstow was covering the injured hand with his cap as he left the field, as if he didn't want anyone to see the damage.

This looks bad. Bairstow is still hunched over on the floor and Joe Root is kneeling down next to him looking concerned.

Bairstow is going to go off. He's wincing in pain as he walks towards the dressing room. The ball swung after the bat and looked to hit the end of his middle finger on his left hand.

The players are going to take drinks.

He's in serious pain. He flung the left glove away after taking it pretty awkwardly. It was one of those where you don't know whether to have fingers pointing up or down.

Why does a bouncer, no matter how ineffective get a big shout of "yes (insert bowler's name here)" every time? It's one of cricket's unwritten rules.

    Ouch.

One of England's two other keepers could be called into action here. Bairstow is down on the turf looking serious pain after taking one on the end of the finger. On comes the physio.

    Pujara 41, Kohli 21

More groans from the crowd. Stokes finds Pujara's edge this time but it drops a couple of yards short of Keaton Jennings at third slip. Stokes leaps up in the air in expectation but then comes thudding back down and puts his hand on his head. England have bowled well in the last 20 minutes without any reward.

"A wand of a left arm." That's my favourite so far.

You'd think with three wicketkeepers in the team England would be able to catch. It seems not.

England are appealing for lbw for the first time this morning and unsurprisingly it's Jimmy Anderson who has brought about the appeal. The only issue is Kohli got a big bit of bat on it.

Anderson's frustration builds further when he beats the India captain's edge again. He looks away in frustration pulling a face similar to me when I realise I've left my lunch in the kitchen at home.

The ball is not really wobbling as much as on the first two days so therefore batting is a lot easier. This is an opportunity for Pujara to get a big score and seal that number three spot for himself.

    Pujara 41, Kohli 21

Ben Stokes is on, replacing Chris Woakes.

He tempts Pujara into a loose waft of a drive and the India batsman misses. There's a noise as the ball passes the bat that gets a few interested but I think Pujara hit ground rather than ball.

Oh. Maybe not. The UltraEdge replay shows a spike after the ball had past the bat but there was daylight between bat and ground. Weird.

The catching for both teams has been abysmal in the slips. India caught a lot better yesterday and that is why they dismissed England for the score they did. These are all sharp catches, below the knee is not going to be easy. When I played you stood with your hands touching the turf, because it's easier to get up. The England players have their hands on their knees, you give yourself a better chance if you are crouching low.

I think that's 14 slip catches dropped by England now in this series. That's shocking. Buttler has dropped his fair share. Jimmy Anderson's mood will probably be taking a turn for the worse.

  15. dropped catch

Pujara dropped on 40published at 39.2 overs

It's not even a shock when they go down anymore. Pujara just dangles the bat to a delivery from Anderson and edges to second slip. Jos Buttler is the fielder there and he goes one-handed down to his left. The ball hits his palm and drops out. It's one that if he'd have taken it we'd be calling it a great catch but I think a good slip fielder should take that more often than not.

Blackburn Lad reckons England should "park the bus," a phrase more common in football of course. What other footballing phrases could be transferred to cricket? He's got a good touch with the bat for a big lad?

Blackburn Lad: Chasing 450 is a bit rich, more like 500+, we have to dismiss India first and that could take all day, leaving just 2 days left. Best option is to stifle India for two days then park the bus and play for the draw. Sounds bad but a draw is better than a loss

Kohli gives Pujara a thumbs up and a punch of the gloves after flick off the toes gives India's number three four. Anderson responds with a bouncer that Pujara easily ducks under but the slips all chirp "yes Jimmy" in unison. Alastair Cook throws the ball from slip to a teammate in the covers with an off-spinner's action. I hope it hasn't got to that stage yet.

    Pujara 36, Kohli 15

That's another reason for India to just keep batting today. Pujara and others can just keep trying to play themselves into better form with the rest of the series in mind. Virat Kohli doesn't need that. Does he ever look out of nick these days? A push through extra cover only brings him two but it was a thing of beauty.
