More runs for Buttler. Short and wide from Ishant Sharma and the England batsman calmly cuts into the ground and the ball races away for four square of the wicket.
Buttler 70, Stokes 42
England have their first runs of this evening session and the crowd will the ball to the boundary off Buttler bat but it is pulled up just short. Buttler is now onto 70 and is just 15 short of his best Test score.
Stokes is disappointed in himself for missing out on a full delivery from Bumrah. His head rocks back but he isn't out and that is the most important thing.

They batted extremely well through that afternoon session, can they do so again? If they can, they can at least make the Indians perspire, although I don't think they will be thinking about winning quite yet.
The sun is out. Bumrah is going to bowl. Jos Buttler is on strike. There are 37 overs left in the day. Play will stop at 18:30 BST.

Well, well.
I must admit I didn't expect to be coming back and talking to you. The fact Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler batted through the afternoon means you'll have to put up with me again.
England fans - if I mess this up I'm truly sorry.
What an enjoyable session that was, 27 overs and 89 runs added in calm, orthodox fashion. There are 37 overs remaining in the day and the new ball is due in 18 overs. Much still to do for Stokes and Buttler then and the partnership is now on Nelson at 111 but let's have less of the superstitions as we hand back to Matthew Henry.
Mr Agnew currently talking to Patrick, the TMS listener and writer of that fantastic email on the recent death of his father that moved and resonated with so many of us. He is about to embark on a charity cycle ride covering 1,000 miles in nine days. You can listen to the email being read out here.

India will keep telling themselves in the field that if they get one they could get a few in these conditions.

Kerry Thomas: Tea. I’d better do something constructive for the next twenty minutes as I haven’t moved from the sofa all day. This is compelling.

Buttler and Stokes can really hold their heads high.

That is the way to play. That is fantastic to see.
Eng 73-4
And just the other side of the River Trent from there of course, is Meadow Lane, home of Notts County, the oldest professional team. Shami looking dangerous with some reverse swinging yorkers but Buttler seizes on to a full toss and caresses it through the covers for four. That will be tea, a fine response from England and it is applauded by their captain in his dark glasses and England hoody on the balcony.

So close to the City Ground that from the back of the upper tier someone with a decent arm could land a cricket ball in the centre circle.
Target 521
Buttler latches on to to a full toss from Ashwin and drives it purposefully through the covers for his 12th boundary in the sunshine. Will this next one be the last over before tea?

I have just seen a picture of Broad and Anderson on the balcony and I bet they are muttering 'that is the way to do it'.
Stokes 42, Buttler 57
We are just wondering if the old mind game specialist himself Mr Kohli will bring himself into the attack before tea? Three of his four Test wickets have been wicketkeepers so maybe he will target Buttler before the break. For the moment it is the shuffling Shami, hiding the ball with his left hand into his delivery stride to prevent the batsmen gaining any information. A rock solid forward defensive shot from Stokes offers encouragement to England followers.

Surprised by the record of top five batters scoring double figures in all four innings. If it wasn't for Mr Pant's second innings, the top seven batsmen in all four innings would have scored double figures. Now that would have been remarkable.
Roland Gardner
Stokes 42, Buttler 56
The end of Ashwin's 12th over during which he rips a wide one past the Stokes edge at 56mph. Can the England middle order duo see it through until the interval...and could they kindly then do it for four more sessions to save their teammates having to bat?
