  1. Eng 212-4published at 75.1 overs

    Stokes 52, Buttler 95

Buttler is within one hit now. Shami drifts onto his pads for a second time and gets dispatched.

This will mean so much to Buttler if he gets there. He might have thought another crack at Test cricket wouldn't come.

If this can't inspire the rest of the England batsmen to apply themselves going forward I'm not sure what can.

    Target 521

I actually just twitched a little in my seat in fright when Ben Stokes wound up for a big sweep. Ashwin may be hampered by injury but he's a clever bowler. He's just bowled one which goes like a leg-spinner, the opposite direction to how he normally spins it. I think Stokes picked it. He defends.

Jeff Hitchings: Failing to convince anyone in my house that this is absorbing Test cricket. The most common word I'm hearing is dull. No hope for some people.

Francis Ward: For a man who hit 200 in 163 balls this is a big effort from Stokes.

Jos Buttler is on 91. He needs nine more runs to get his first century in Tests. This beautiful shot took him past his previous best score...

It just looks like the air has been taken out of the ball, it is soft and not zipping in the surface. That's what happens when you play like Stokes and Buttler, they have worn them down.

  7. Eng 208-4published at 74 overs

    Stokes 52, Buttler 91

I mentioned earlier how much chatter there was from the Indian fielders when they were all over England, reducing them to 62-4. Stokes and Buttler have quietened that down a little. Trent Bridge is only around half full today but I wonder how many more will turn up if Stokes and Buttler get to the close.

Six overs until the new ball.

This is one thing we have seen with Virat, when things are just going along, very rarely do you see him trying anything very different.

Buttler moves into the nineties with a boundary through square leg. Brilliant timing.

  10. Eng 202-4published at 73 overs

    Buttler 87, Stokes 51

I was just about to write Ashwin isn't getting the same fizz off the surface today. Just as I thought it he rips one through the gap between Jos Buttler's bat and pad. It flicks the pad and the way through and misses the bail by an inch. That will make the England dressing room shudder.

The 147 balls Stokes took to make fifty is his slowest in Test cricket, beating the 128 he took at Auckland earlier this year.

It's been a very good innings, 147 balls for that fifty. He's got to go again though, it's not enough.

Not the prettiest way to do it but Ben Stokes has reached his 14th Test fifty. He's nearly wiped out by a big full toss from Ishant but manages to get bat on it, get back on his feet and run a couple. It has come from 147 balls, against his attacking instincts. You have to give him credit for that.

I'm just wondering if Pandya has got some sort of niggle to have only bowled six overs, but he is out there in his brimmer (sunhat).

Shot! Jos Buttler now has his highest Test score. It's lovely drive off Ashwin through the covers. He got right to the pitch and flicked it with his wrists. Onto 86 he goes. Next stop - a maiden Test ton.

I don't think he has got the right bowlers on for the reverse swing. Shami was terrific before tea and you've got Pandya who got all those wickets in the first innings.
