It's the hope that kills you. Two different cries of "come on England" are heard from the Pavilion End. What other sport can provide such compelling entertainment when the result is as good as known?

Oooof. That's some significant swing for Ishant to Stokes. The England man just gets his bat down and squeezes it onto his pad. That would have been trouble had he missed it. Stokes smiles back at the bowler, knowing he got a good-un. Both of these batsmen have played a lot of IPL cricket in recent years. They'll know their opponents well.

Buttler's longest innings was 138 balls against Pakistan.

It could easily be Jos Buttler's longest innings of any sort for a few years. He hasn't played much Championship cricket for Lancashire and when he has he hasn't made many runs. He must be getting tired.

There's no big turn for Ashwin. He ends the over with that seamer he bowls but he's still grimacing. He has only bowled 14 overs today and hasn't taken a wicket. I bet if he wasn't carrying an injury he'd have bowled more than that.

When will Jos Buttler start to think about three figures? He's timing it well...

That new ball will come in 12 overs. Spinner Ashwin is coming back on.

I just wonder if this is the time you want your fifth bowler to give your opening bowlers a breather before the surge with the new ball. No doubt India will take it, unless they can get some reverse.

Actress Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli's wife, is yawning in the stands. I bet there wasn't any of that earlier when wickets were falling. Stokes is finding the middle of the bat right now without being unnecessarily aggressive. He collects three with a drive through extra cover.

It's a mountain, more than 300 runs, 30 overs today and another set of 90 tomorrow. It's a long way away and no-one dares to dream yet.

India need six wickets to win

England's first innings lasted 230 balls. This Stokes-Buttler partnership has now lasted more than 250 balls.

Bumrah is coming round the wicket now to Stokes and the England all-rounder hits a drive right out of the middle of the bat down into the pitch. It bounces up over the bowler's head and allows Stokes to scamper a single.

Ashwin is not happy, he is trying to touch his toes and it looks like me trying to touch my toes, having to bend the knees to do it.

Ishant's floppy top is flowing behind him when he runs in. Buttler's shadow is stretching out perfectly square of the wicket on the leg side. It was heavily overcast this morning when England lost their wickets but it's sunny at Trent Bridge now. The forecast doesn't suggest there'll be any build-up of late evening cloud.

Buttler moves into the 80s with two more boundaries. The crowd is starting to get louder. Do they believe?

You could easily send Bairstow in after Woakes and ideally you'd like to give him another day to rest that finger. If you have decided he is going to bat I don't think you should change tactics and not send him out if there is a new ball.

Sorry, Ian. England still have to bat the rest of tonight and all of tomorrow if they are to avoid defeat.

The awkward-looking Bumrah continues. This Stokes innings reminds me of the one he played in New Zealand in a similar situation earlier this year. He batted 268 for his 66 that day in a losing cause. England need him to double that. He has been very watchful and blocks out Bumrah.

It is quite difficult if you're a batsman to see which side the shiny side is on, even if the bowler has the ball in his right hand as normal.

We saw a hint of reverse swing before tea which makes things so much more difficult for the batsmen. Ishant is running in with the ball in his left hand so that Buttler can't see which way it will swing until the last minute. Buttler is leaving well. He isn't interested with a few fuller but still wide deliveries from the India quick.
