The England batsmen confer in the afternoon sunshine. We have 14 minutes until tea, the partnership is 100. Bairstow is padded up, but has a broken finger. The sun is out. Who is going to make the next move?

And he was right. No umpire's call this time, missing leg stump. As you were, as Liam Gallagher would say.

That looks leg side. Ben Stokes walked up to Buttler and said 'going down'.

  5. Umpire reviewpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

A firm push from Stokes brings him three and signals the 100 partnership from 195 balls. Many of the crowd are on their feet and the two England batsmen exchange a firm first pump in mid-pitch. But hang on, we are now set for another lbw review. It has also been given not out, so let's see.

Stokes is happy to employ the sweep to Ashwin but this one was heading straight towards the timbers. Luckily for England the left leg stopped it doing so.

Buttler and Stokes have played well. They have played nice and sensibly. They have just started to play few more strokes but have to be aware it is down to these two to take it pretty much throughout the day.

There is enough out there that if a new batsman was to go out they would find it very difficult.

Bright sunshine over Trent Bridge now as Bumrah continues from the Pavilion End with elasticated supports over both elbows. A streaky drive from Buttler might well have found Kohli at third slip, but the India captain had moved himself to short extra and it raced away for another four.

Buttler's ninth Test 50 and it has been brought up in fine style with an exquisite cover drive to the boundary, his 10th four.

I know we're under the pump here but this is why Test cricket is the ultimate. Yes it's great to see teams blown away in an hour but nothing quite like seeing a real war of attrition and batsmen grinding away for a result.

India retain their review of course as it was umpire's call, so they still have two up their sleeves. Buttler calmly strokes the final ball into the covers for a single to bring up the 150. Half an hour until tea.

Both teams have two reviews remaining and India are going to use one for an lbw from Ashwin to Stokes. It has been given not out by the on-field official. Let's see.

In the last Test Buttler was walking right across his stumps and making himself a big lbw candidate. He hasn't done that there. He has adjusted.

    Stokes 38, Buttler 46

Stokes frees his heavily tattooed arms and gets a bottom edge to Bumrah that flies away for his fifth boundary. The goatee-bearded Bumrah gets one to rise up and rap Stokes on the glove and Buttler gets trapped on the crease but it is heading down the leg side, there is no appeal and England survive, the partnership extending to 86, which is deserving of an informal drinks break.
